My friend gives me books as presents, but he always reads them first. He obviously doesn't think its at all wrong. Last time I did it I said to him, sarcastically, "Thanks, but rather than getting a new book, reading it then giving it to me, why not just by second hand books since one person reading my book is the same as two or three". The latest book he gave me was a library second with the sticker peeled off the spine. It was to be the last in a set that I paid $20 for every other book new for, so I just went and bought the last book myself but read the library one so I need not damage the spine of the new one.

How do I tactfully tell this guy that I want new presents or none at all. TACTFULLY.

I love autobiographies, looking for a woman's perspective. Not looking for something political or with drug/alcohol abuse, more like man vs man (or should I say self vs self...?) Time period not so relevant. Something inspiring...

I'm obsessive about drafts, and I usually have at least three drafts finished before I ask for other people to proof my writing (maybe two or three people).

Most of the time I end up with five or six drafts before I consider the piece finished, though I've had a couple that have only gone through three or four before I'm satisfied.

Just curious as to the tendencies of others regarding this aspect of writing.

Note: I put "finished" in quotation marks because I don't find any piece of writing to ever be completely finished- there are almost always little things to tweak.

I am yearning to find the perfect book that has a great combination of horror and erotic. I have read HP Lovecrafts works and love it. Any great authors from long ago, possible something that made modern library's top 100. I have read a lot of authors , unfortunately none that are great writers. I would something that is a bit sadistic and boredline repulsive.

In the past books have been written that the saying, "pen mightier than the sword" rung so true. Like during the Civil War, that book was written, "Uncle Tom's Cabin" that started the culture to stand up and say, "That's it! No More!" That was the end of slavery right there. So my question is, where could I find a book about reshaping an ideal? It happens all the time and people gain better understanding about themselves. Like with Philidelphia movie with Tom Hanks. Things changed and have been that way since. I am working to help improve the greatness of people's lives, through their hearts with God's help. He wants me to do this.

I need to know of a book where I can learn to reshape the ideals of any non survival situation, as God would ONLY see them as ungodly and not in his name. That would be totally againist his love and word. I don't need religion texts. Just a simple book to help improve things. That's why I am a writer. Please just anwser this. Your's will be later on.

It isn't a matter of vocabulary or grammar. Its more or less about not being able to formulate the pictures and ideas I have in my head into words.

I'm an extremely visual person. Thoughts come to me as pictures without internal narrative. I just 'see' it. So, whenever I try to write about what I see for various reasons (novel, game design document, script, etc.) the words fail to come. I can see the image vividly but whenever I DO make an attempt at describing it, it seems shallow and boring, nothing as epic as it comes to me.

I'd greatly appreciate any tips or sources that assist writers. I don't think its writer's block because its not a lack of idea, but just an inability to formulate the ideas to words.

Thanks in advance to anyone whom offers help!

Okay, I'm writting a short story and I want to have song lyrics in the mix. Would I have to get the artist's permission to use the lyrics or is it okay to use them if I use them in the exact context of the song and cite the artist and the song?

I have a book called "Advice to a daughter in opposition to the advice to a sonne" written by Eugenius Theodidactus in 1658. It's an original. I looked it up on the Internet and It's written about in many websites. I'm curious how much it's worth. Where can I find this out without having to pay someone for an appraisal?
