If you go by agents and publishers, fantasy and vampires are becoming overdone. Many state clearly in their submission guidelines that they do not want to read fantasy.

Personally the trend I find overdone is the bratty 12 year old rich kid books. They set a terrible example for young girls. They show rude young girls who have to have everything - things the average kid will never see. Further, they show kids who are bordering on anorexia and bulemia - size 2 and trying to lose weight. Again, a very bad image for young girls. The publisher I work with is very eager to get books like The Earth My Butt and Other Big Round Things - books that show a healthy image for young girls. There are also not enough books for boys in the 12 - 15 year old range with positive images either.

If you are an author aiming to write to those age groups, skip the "disses" and the Prada handbags and write stories about normal kids overcoming problems and obstacles and succeeding and you will find it a whole lot easier to reach publishers and agents. They are dying for those kind of books. Pax - C

The whole erotic horror thing is so overdone - people like Laurell K Hamilton etc have become trite and cliched. Vampires, werewolves, all of that is just old and tired now.
