In HS I read a short story that took place in WWII Italy. The story centered around four women that were traveling together and talking about their sons and their various stances and positions in war. The last woman's son died, but she was proud of it. In the end however, you could tell that she was really torn up about losing her son.

I thought the title was "The War", but that dosen't seem to be it. I also think that the story was written in Italy... maybe it was translated from Italian? I read it for a world literature class.

Has anybody ever read this short story? I'd just like to read it again. Thanks!

Is general adult fiction or general fiction mean that the agent/publisher takes all genres, when it's not specified? I'm just curious.

what's the beauty of life if your dreams aren't realized

i'm not talking about material wealth, family, children; what's being expected/conventional. i'm talking about something that only belongs to you, someth. that you really, really long for; like finding your romantic soulmate, creating a masterpiece...

thanks

I have just finished reading a very emotional but amazing book (The Lovely Bones) and I badly need cheering up. Anyone recommend a good humorous novel.

Your response should explore any TWO of these elements: theme, characters, plot and language of the book, Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare. This is an urgent question, please attempt to answer seriously. Thank you!

There were 2 or 3 kids in this maze and on platforms between the stairs they would find these little machines that would give them food pellets if they did what it asked. At the end, the kids come out of this maze and when crossing the street, freak at the stoplight that looks like these machines. Any idea what this book was?

Halloween

Halloween so very near
Trick or Treaters aren't even here
i got bored counting the days down
till Halloween barely got here.

I found my way out
I bought some candy and shout
"Halloween is almost here!"

1 day close
i am almost toast

Halloween is finally here!

Ghouls and Goblins with
witches galore
Why is Halloween here for?

Lets have a party
Because Halloween is alomost tardy
So lets all be dandy and eat some candy
And
Celebrate because Halloween
only comes once a year!

2 questions.......
1. Why isn't there a School Exhibition of magic at Hogwarts ?
2. When does one become a witch or a wizard ? Is it when they show magical powers or is it determined from birth ?
( In the case of Tom Riddle, I remember Dumbledore saying that his name has been down for hogwarts since birth- HBP p 248)

I just got done reading King's Dark tower series and I found that I rather enjoyed the post apocalyptic feel it had for most of it. I've read his Stand and Cell but neither were exactly what I'm looking for. I prefer the tradition of science fiction's social criticisms to King's fantasy. So does anyone have any suggestions for me?

i found out the history of my great great grandmother and also found a stern picture of her that seemed to look at me.

dont scorn me great, great grandmother
as i look upon your face
dont frown upon me with your
head full of pretty lace

when i look at you, you look so engraged
your face is trying to tell me something
as it leaps out of the page

we have never met i know
but your eyes are telling me
never to let go
so what do u want to say
oh stranger that i see

you seem to frown upon the very soul of me
are your eyes following me through the journey of my life
tell me your story
your're someones mother
someone's wife

looking closer i see sadness
in your eyes i see wonderment, heartache
and a whirlppol of cries
you are my great great grandmother
that i do know
i wishi i had been in your world
or u in mine to say hello

you have never known me
nor i have known u
but one day far above the clouds
we will say "hi" just for a while.....we two.

Mine is:
We Are Seven

Poem lyrics of We Are Seven by William Wordsworth.

--A Simple Child,
That lightly draws its breath,
And feels its life in every limb,
What should it know of death?

I met a little cottage Girl:
She was eight years old, she said;
Her hair was thick with many a curl
That clustered round her head.

She had a rustic, woodland air,
And she was wildly clad:
Her eyes were fair, and very fair;
--Her beauty made me glad.

"Sisters and brothers, little Maid,
How many may you be?"
"How many? Seven in all," she said
And wondering looked at me.

"And where are they? I pray you tell."
She answered, "Seven are we;
And two of us at Conway dwell,
And two are gone to sea.

"Two of us in the church-yard lie,
My sister and my brother;
And, in the church-yard cottage, I
Dwell near them with my mother."
