I have read the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Artemis Fowl books, plus the Wist List.
The 3rd book is called the eternity code.
(spoilers!)
What happens is, Artemis in his infinite wisdom, has created a microcumputer faster and with better performance than any other human computer from parts of the Lep officers helmets.
He wants to show it off to Jon Spiro (someone like Bill Gates) and that is where everything goes wrong.
Artemis and Butler get ambushed by Spiro and his henchmen and Spiro steals the computer. Butler gets shot in the process and Artemis makes a phone call to the Times newspaper saying different names like LEP, B'wa Kell, etc. and the Lep send Holly after him to find out what is going on. She saves Butler from death with her magic and they try to steal back the computer.
In the end with a few clever tricks they manage to do so but for the good of mankind and fairies likewise Artemis and the rest get their minds wiped by Lep.

I think they are of the best sci/fi books I have ever read.
Fast-paced, clever and funny.

I've read all of them, and will read the one that just came out once my daughter finishes it.

I have enjoyed reading them, and I am not a big sci-fi fan. They are an original blend of futuristic and middle-world (a la Tolkein) fantasy.

The characters are fairly complex, and none are either predictably all "good" or all "bad". As my daughter pointed out, they act like real adults. So, in spite of the completely unrealistic-ness of the problems, setting etc. the resolutions are consistent with human nature and make sense to the humans reading the books.

I am testimony that the books are not just for the under-20 crowd. I find the humor and references to be witty and very clever sometimes. Enough so that I can't wait for my daughter to finish the latest book...

I read the first three, and the third was definitely the best--it's on a completely different level than the others. If you can find it anywhere, I highly recommend it.

I'm neutral on them. The first was OK, the second I could hardly get through, and the third was, again, fantastic. So it comes out to a good neutral.

The books are really good. Not quite on the level of Harry Potter, King Fortis the Brave or Eragon, but still very good.

They're a good read when there is nothing else available but not good enough for a second read.
