At sixteen, it is time to start exploring the world of true adulthood. I would talk about it first, and then start them on something like "Peyton Place," explaining that in its day, it was a huge scandal to be caught reading it, yet it was a runaway best seller!
John Steinbeck might also be a good choice, perhaps "East of Eden."

read Invitation to the Game
It's still one of my favorite books; it was a Battle of the Books selection when I was in elementary/middle school, but it's an amazing read.
It's about a future where humans are slowly being replaced by robots in the future. People who are unemployed end up being sent to closed cities where they spend the rest of their lives doing whatever they want within the confines of the city. Perfect? wrong. There's no direction; there's no purpose in life for many people. Some people take it all in stride, but others, like a small group of students who have just graduated from high school, are unhappy with a directionless life. They hear rumors about a "game" that you can only play if youre invited. They all receive an invitation.... what happens next? The story will surprise you and the ending will make you smile.
Please read this book... it's marvelous

Have you read the Mediator series? (By Med Cabot) Omg it is the BEST things i ever read in my short teenage life! And the ending is just fantastic. You can totally relate to it too. It's about this teenage girl with this power to talk to ghosts and is supposed to help them "move on", but she is troubled by this because it means that she will never have a normal life. The juicy part is that she falls in love with the ghost of a 150 year old hot latino guy who is living right in her bedroom. I know it sounds a lot like Buffy, i thought so too. But it's really good.
I read the entire series in like 2-3 weeks, i was so into it. It's 6 books altogether.
Oh and i also have friends that enjoy reading the Gossip Girls Series. And i've read The True Meaning of Cleavage. It's pretty cool and funny too. And don't worry, it's nothing sexual, that's just the title, lol.

There are so many good books. I have linked below Mark Twain and Walt Whitman. Both are great writers. If you like science fiction I recommend Andre Norton. There is a link below.
You can go to the library and ask for suggestions or just look around and find something interesting. I wish you well and hope you enjoy on of the most pleasureful activities of modern civilization.

I liked K's choices. If you are talking about "literature", sadly the only book I read in High School that could be considered literature was "The Great Gatsby" and I still think it's one of the finest books I've read. Dickens was always a job to read except for "A Christmas Carole". Dickens was an unkown until he published this. If you have liked any of the movies, you have to read it.

Go to your local library or book store and ask for suggestions.
When I was 16 I liked Gone with the Wind, Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre. Anything by Jane Austen and Agatha Christie would also be good.

The five people you meet in heaven-Mitch Albom. I'm 16 too, and that's a great book. You may choose the 7 series of The chronicles of Narnia, I think those are books for all ages.

Try Dan Brown, like Angels and Demons, Divinci Code, or Deception Point. Also, the Kite Runner is really good, or The Brethern by John Grisham.
