I just got done reading King's Dark tower series and I found that I rather enjoyed the post apocalyptic feel it had for most of it. I've read his Stand and Cell but neither were exactly what I'm looking for. I prefer the tradition of science fiction's social criticisms to King's fantasy. So does anyone have any suggestions for me?

Anthem by Ayn Rand

It's about a society that has regressed following an apocalyptic war that leaves people starting over in an almost medieval point in time.

Individuality is against the law; the word "I" is no longer used. People use the term "We" to speak of themselves and to think of doing anything without the group is considered a crime. To have a "best friend" is a crime because one should not prefer one person over any other.

The protagonist is called Equality 7-2521 and he narrates a chilling yet beautiful story about his place in the extreme socialist regime which has replaced the former social structures that existed before the ancient wars.

A few suggestions from literary/sci-fi cross-over books or authors - look out for major novelist Cormac McCarthy's first post-apocalyptic work, The Road, due out in November (I think) featuring a father and son crossing a bleak and wasted American landscape. Lots of writers get drawn to the genre as a way of making social comment even if their usual field is a different genre altogether-Margaret Atwood's Oryx and Crake, Iain Banks's A Song of Stone. J.G.Ballard is always good for dystopian views of modern society. And, of course, the classic science fiction work of John Wyndham - The Day of the Triffids is an apocalypse of a sort (the influence of so many) and The Chrysalids.

Search under Alternative History in Amazon. There are some books you may like in that category.
