First choice - A detective story - love the human mind.
If I don't find anything interesting , or have read most of the stuff on the shelf, then maybe science fiction (Fantasy?)
Next choice would be a story about a family (Swiss family Robinson, Gone with the wind,?)
and last would be mushy stuff.
I do like reading about pirates, and I do like books based on historical facts-authors such as James Michener, etc.
There is also another category that I like-books similar to Atlas Shrugged, Fountainhead - by Ayn Rand.

Well it all depends on what kind of story one likes to read. I myself would go for a detective story because I like a good thriller packed with a lot of suspense. Then, I'd probably get a family story second, and finally the short ones come in third. I do read fantasy books sometimes, but I don't like them that much. I think they are too monotone, too predictable. Once you've read one you know all the stories. There's only one possible ending. I always want the author to surprise me at the end of the book.

3) A detective story
If there is a suspense element then I don't have to work on my patience to sit & read the book rather I'll be glued to it & will try to read it as soon as possible to find all the secrets . Not just that, even my mind will get some food by thinking about the options & solutions and trying to unlock the mystry .
Definitely a detective story .

Probably the detective story. When I went to make a data base of my favorite authors, as much so I could learn to use the data base program as for any other reason, I discovered that most of what I was listing was detective, spy, mystery type stories. Lawyer stories, too, especially John Grisham and Scott Turow.
