on the closing credits of John Carpenters cult (and fantastic) movie 'The Thing' there is mention that it is based on a book called 'who goes there?', but I can't seem to find it anywhere.

Anyone had any luck?

1.Where do u think “The Lottery” takes place? What purpose does u suppose the writer has in making this setting appear so familiar and ordinary?
2.In the 2 and 3 paragraph, what details foreshadow the ending of the story?
3.What do the black wooden box and the fatal black spot suggest to you? are there any other symbols in the story?
4.What is the meaning of Old Man Warner's saying "Lottery in June, Corn be heavy soon"?
5. What do u think Jackson is driving at? Consider each of the following interpretations and, see if u can find any evidence?
A.Take a primitive fertility rite and playfully transfer it to a small American town?
B. Inderectly Express her horror at Holocaust, assuming that the massacre of the Jews was carried out by unwitting, obedient people, like the villagers in the story?
C. Satirize our own society, in which men are selected for the army by lottery (during a time when there is a draft)?
D. She is just writing a memorable, entertaining story that signafies nothing at all.

6. What is the author's own attitude toward the lottery and stoning? what makes her attitude clear?

Years ago I read a science fiction short story (akin to "The Monkey's Paw") about a magical talisman (?) that would allow you to go back in time, or would bring you some kind of luck, or some such. The catch was that you had to sell the talisman for less than what you bought it for -- or lose your soul. It had been passed from person to person for years, and now the man who had it had to go to another country (India?) b/c that country had a tiny penny-type currency that would fulfill the contract. If he could find someone to buy the talisman, that would be the final exchange b/c (being the tiniest currency in the world) whoever bought it could not resell it and therefore would lose their soul. I recall the story ended with the final purchaser staggering (drunk) into the night, saying something like, "No big deal. I'm going to go to hell anyway." This was a wonderful story that I read in school, thought about for years, and have been unable to find again. Help me please! Thanks.

I generally read contemporary fiction. Quality stuff. Not mass-market paperbacks, not romance, not whodunits, not fantasy novels. My most recent favorite was Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides, which won a Pulitzer.

Any recommendations? Thanks.

I really like reading books that aren't bad but really aren't helping me learn anything. My mom keeps wanting me to start reading these good books that are classics likea tale of 2 cities. and books like that. I know that when school starts again that I will have to start reading better books but I know that I won't suddenly be able to go from reading 5th grade level books to 12th grade level books. Some one please help me figure out how to get myself motivated to start reading better books.

The controversy about the personality of Jesus Christ is the major difference between Islam and Christianity. This difference keeps the followers of the two religions apart. Muslims look at Jesus Christ as a great Prophet of God and love and respect him as much as they love and respect Abraham, Moses and Muhammad. Christians on the other hand consider Jesus as God or son of God, a concept that Muslims cannot accept. Islam teaches that Jesus never made such a claim for himself. As a matter of fact all the cardinal doctrines of Christianity that are rejected by Islam center around the personality of Jesus. Specifically these are:
1. The Trinity 2. The Divinity of Jesus 3. The Divine Sonship of Christ 4. Original Sin, and 5. Atonement. It is clear that all these dogmas are the result of over-exhalting Jesus Christ above what God wants him to be. These differences focusing on the personality of Jesus have overshadowed the many similarities between Christianity and Islam.
