Please read the books first.
Why do you ask am I telling in you this?
If you read the books first you will have the background knowledge to catch all the little inside jokes in the movie. Some of the bigger mistakes in the graphics too.
It always more fun to read the book and then watches the movie to see if the casing direction got it right for what you imagined the char. to look like.

the radio series was awesome when it first went out. but it might be a little difficult to follow these days. there was a lot of satire of contemporary issues which you wouldn't get unless you were there first time around.
when douglas adams turned his radio scripts into books he took some care not to rely on current affairs so much. the five books are one of the funniest things written in the last century, and really easy to read.
the tv series was ok - but doesn't have anything not already in either the radio series or the books (and is missing a lot of stuff in one or the other of those).
i found the film really disappointing: one of the worst book -> film transitions i had ever seen.
if you watch the film first it will lilkeliest spoil the book for you.
personally i wouldn't.

I saw the movie and well, it was kinda lame. I mean, you may not think so but I did. Though I didn't read the book which may have been better. Okay I'm gettin off the subject sorry, the movie was sucky

I've read the book, seen the TV series and listened to the Radio Show and they are all brilliant in their own way.
BUT avoid the film like the plague it's really very awful.

i've read the book and enjoyed it. i haven't had a chance to watch the movie yet, but judging by other people's answers, it looks like it's a good thing i missed the movie. i still would like to check it out, though.

i heard the original radio series on the radio in the uk - awesome
i read the books - awesome
i saw the original tv series in the uk - ok
i saw the 1st 20 minutes of the movie and abandoned it - total crap
read the books (all 5 of them) and skip the movie

read the book definitely, and you should probably read all the other HHGTTG books too.
