I generally read contemporary fiction. Quality stuff. Not mass-market paperbacks, not romance, not whodunits, not fantasy novels. My most recent favorite was Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides, which won a Pulitzer.

Any recommendations? Thanks.

Before I saw "Capote", I read "In Cold Blood" for the first time. I absolutely could not put it down. I'm not one for non-fiction, but despite knowing what the outcome would be for the killers, I couldn't wait to read more. Great stuff.

I also recently read "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay" by Michael Chabon, which I believe also won the Pulitzer. Excellent read.

If you have not already read it, try Beach Music by Pat Conroy, my favorite book of all time. Jack McCall, residing in Italy with his daughter Leah after his wife Shyla's suicide, is called back home when his mother announces she has leukemia. Narrated with rich detail by Jack and dipping into the history of the complicated relationships of those involved, I could not put this book down. From tales of Nazi Germany by Shyla's father to tells of escape from abusive families, this novel is a must-read. I like all genres of literature and this one is tops! The above suggestion of I Know This Much Is True by Wally Lamb is also a good one. A great drama, a tale of twin brothers who couldn't be more different.

I was rereading Catcher in the Rye by Salinger which was more powerful to me as an adult than it was as a teenager, moved into Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini, out only two months, the theme is reminiscent of Catcher -set in Manhattan, teen angst, mental illness, could not put it down.
