is baudolino better than il nome de la rosa?

Its not "better", but I found it really enjoyable. Its kind of a medieval Forrest Gump, as Baudolino claims to be responsible for everything from the letters of Abelard and Heloise to the legend of the Grail, and heads to the realm of Prester John.

Not nearly as deep as Name of the Rose, but more fun, I thought

No, because Il nome de la rosa is a novel on historic matters and has a lot (a huge amount indeed) of valid, true an interesting information, mainly historical one, that gives reader a broad spectrum on medieval society.
Baudolino is a work of fiction.
But as you already know, better is a brand each mind uses to label its interests.

I enjoyed "The Name of the Rose" more than "Baudolino" owing to the historical detail, as opposed to the necessarily interpretive viewpoin tin the latter. Still, "Foucault's Pendulum" is better yet, with a richness of detaill owing to the author's own experiences in the settings described in the book, and a style more reminiscent of his non-fiction humor. Very much like "The Davinci Code", for people who can think. Joke for ya... Whaddaya get when you cross Umberto Eco and The Godfather? An offer you can't understand...
