There is a series set in ancient Rome, about an "informer" (we would call him a private detective) named Marcus Didius Falco, written by Lindsey Davis. The first book in the series is "The Silver Pigs".
Even if you are not interested in history, I doubt you would be able to put this down! It is incredible! Each book in the series has a well-written, stand alone mystery. The characters also develop from book to book, which is nice as you read each of the books. And, if you do have any interest in history, that is just icing on the cake. In fact, even if you don't, these books might spark your interest, seeing how much like us and how much unlike us the Romans could be.

Quilts:
By "Earlene Fowler" The detective is a curator at quilt museum. Each book title is based on a quilt block/pattern
A bit more 'violence'
Books by Harlan Coben

I hope this gets you started. If you have any questions, you can ask at any bookstore or check your local public library.

Tony Hillerman's mystery books are awesome--they're usually set in the midwest and are heavily tied to Native American tradition--they main character is usually Navajo, part of the book takes place on reservation, etc. I haven't read one in a long time, but we used to listen to them on tape on long trips and they're fascinating.
