Billy Collins, who was a former poet laureate, is very popular in America becuase he writes some really humorous pieces. Galway Kinnell is an excellent poet revealing some deep truths. Some think Lyn Lifshin is great because she writes and publishes more than 10 poets combined. I think one of the greatest living American poets is Lisel Mueller, who was born in Germany, lives in Illinois and was a recipient of the Pulitzer Prize a few years ago. an individual, she doesn't follow the "style" of the day, just writes layered, wondrous poems in a way no one else does.
