How do you understand poetry?

2007-12-15 23:40:56 · 17 answers · asked by cathy d 1 in Poetry

Its about the things we take for granted in life.

To the God of Light

The lumious lamp simply hangs in the livingroom.
No one asks if it cares?
They switch its switch at will to fill,
And light spills out but never glares.

Fifty hertz of brilliant flicker it shares,
And no one seems to care?
Radiant beams fill each room with dreams
And shadows hide when it bares

Photons which bounce to trounce the darkness,
Its taken for granted our sun just shines.
We worship metaphors to kill the night,
We huddle around our moonlit shrines.

Ironic is our fire for its never a liar,
But do we really mind?
With sizzled pork sausages we feed the flames,
But when burnt we blame the blind!

We live in a world of increasing expectancy,
But the blind man knows whats light.
We'd scream amighty if it all just switched?
But wouldnt your God be right?

I have a Sony Ericsson phone with a 3.2 mega pixels cybershot camera. The thing is my pictures come out very randomly and I just cannot get the colour sussed on it. If I am in a darkish room, the pictures either are too dark despite the flash, or they come out very grainy and yellow.

I really don't know how to improve my picture taking as sometimes the pictures are perfect (mostly outside).

Any advice please?

A Place Away

November, and your loneliness
already quivers on poles;
a visual silence,
only feet away from the seasonal crowd.

You began a beach, I'm sure.
Plain,
with sand and (sail) and sky-
lovers along the boardwalk
children with their castles and dreams.
But vacation is no longer a private retreat,
but home away from home,
life away from life,
and so beach succumbs to beach.
The drifter had sung his boredome a road
and kept your name
only in rows
of planted palm
and dancing light.
Only the night could have made such changes.
But yours will always be the grandest view,
even behind these light bright walls,
these buoyant demands of youth.
And I have been guilty too,
drunk on sales and this luxury view.
I've made my appointment with this pillowed room,
This building, 6 stories high
pushing your shores away.

I often see the little pixellated "space invader" character from the old Taito arcade game on all sorts of media, such as in ads, on t-shirts, on posters, etc.

What I want to know - is the character regarded as being in the public domain? I.e. can people use it on t-shirts and the like, or do they need to ask Taito? I need an actual answer, as "better safe than sorry" is obvious.

something compared to or in relation to something, in his mind that meant something absolute. yet to me it seems that that is not the case. Since growth dos not have to be into something know, something already decided. I mean it can be spontaneous growth into unknown.
And change can be understood in relation to the world around you, itself in constant change. Plus the you that once was compared to the you today, is compared with your memory, also subject to change and distortion. The reality of it being only a thought. So I dont see his arguement of stating that is proof.

I am not a philosophy expert so please correct me if I am wrong.

"Change does infer one absolute being compared to another absolute. You cannot say you are taller if you aren't certain you were once short."

but does not an sbsolute mean something perfect, thus static?
then you compare your height with a memory, a thought.
how can that be absolute, where does it exist? my mind? even that will pass.

And I don't mean belief as in religion etc., but belief as in general knowledge. Like in question 'why is the sky blue?' and once one provides an answer, we can keep on asking 'why?' or 'why is that so?'. So, how to avoid this logical stalemate?

But the present time has one advantage over every other--it is our own. Past opportunities are gone, future have not come. We may lay in a stock of pleasures, as we would lay in a stock of wine; but if we defer the tasting of them too long, we shall find that both are soured by age.

Lets just say, that person is doing "bad" all the time. You know he is drug/rapist/stabber/robber man person crook. Why does he do it. If you think there is a Satan, how does he affect the "bad" person. How does this person think? How can he be so selfish and cruel? Never thinking about others feelings.
P.S. maybe this guy is "normal" you know no mental problems

From a movie: two guys talk about one guy's army history: He has a photograph of the Queen on his wall. The other guy asks him why does he have her photograph on the wall. The guy answers: "Because I watched my back with a bunch of racist motherfuckers and that earned me the right to hang it there." The other guy then says: "So you are a Prody then." Can you clarify: did he fight in some war, what does he mean when he says I watched MY back (because, I watched her (the Queen's) back would make more sense), and finally: what's a PRODY? Appreciate all the help you can give me. Thanks.
