Any book by John Grisham, James Patterson, or Jeffrey Deaver is good. Also, I just finished reading The Golden Compass because I wanted to compare it to the movie and to my surprise the book was excellent. Happy reading!

I'm reading the "Odd Thomas" trilogy by Dean Koontz right now. Though I'm not finished, I like it fine so far.

"One Hundred Years of Solitude" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez has long been a favorite, an epic set in Colombia and written by the man who embodies the style called "magic realism."

"Teacher Man" by Frank McCourt is my favorite by him, though of his three autobios, it was "Angela's Ashes" that got the Pulitzer. I still enjoyed "Teacher Man" more. Funny, poignant, and all told by a master Irish storyteller.

The Deptford Trilogy by Robertson Davies is also a bit of "magic realism," only these books are from a popular Canadian writer. "Fifth Business" (a theatrical term) followed by "The Manticore," and ending with "World of Wonders." They are all really good reads.

"The Glass Castle" by Jeanette Walls for another autobio, this one also well-written. I'd like to see another book by her.

"The Traveler" by John Twelve Hawks, if you like on-the-edge-of-your-seat reading. A slightly sci-fi definite thriller that takes you all over the world, usually very quickly, with the occasional slow-downs to temper the pace. I like this book a lot.

"Lonesome Dove" by Larry McMurtry; his Pulitzer book. A winner with me.

"All the Pretty Horses" by Cormac McCarthy. If you haven't read any of this man's books yet, this is a good place to start. Then go on and read as many as you can find, if you like this one at all. I did.

I'm sure you'll get lots of lists from people, so I hope you find something in them to please you.
Luck--
