When you look at another person, that is the first thing you see.

But how can a person overcome all the baggage associated with a particular race to not stereotype them...mostly in negative light?

I was going to be Marietta Edgecomb but besides the Pimple Message on her face I don't think anyone would really get it. I want to be someone original, not Hermione, Ginny, etc. I can't be Luna, as my sister (who's going with me) is going as her, and I can't be Trelawney because I was her for the Book 6 Premiere (I won the costume contest xD).
And yes, I still do this stuff.

I'm taking a dance class, and--I hate to toot my own horn--but I think I'm OK. I know I'm not the best, but I don't think I suck...

Well, there are a few REALLY talented students in my class, and the teacher's constantly pointing them out and saying how good they are and how gorgeous they look. CONSTANTLY! To the point of annoying. I have just recently started to worry about myself rather than compare myself to other people in the class, but it's so hard when I'm trying my best and don't get any credit. I hardly know the teacher, so I don't think it's my business to tell her that what she's doing is bothering me. What else should I do? Why are some dance teachers like this?

Remember when Fred and George gave Harry the Marauder's Map of Hogwarts and Hogsmede? How come they didn't give the map to Harry during Harry's second year at hogwarts? Harry could have used the map to find the Chamber of Secrets.

... and if so, should social contract consider vices when freedoms/protections are to be enumerated? For example, some say that the creation of welfare as a protection of against poverty is immoral because humans would naturally exploit it to avoid working. What are your thoughts on this? I'm looking for a philosophical perspective, not political banter.

Why do people believe that by simply admitting they have a problem is enough? It seems people tend to abuse the "emotion" card in order to not deal with the problem. Often you get "it's too hard" or "I'm trying to stop" or my favorite, "you have no idea what I've been through." Is this only a US ocurrence (where emotions are prioritized more than logic)? And if so, aren't humans suppossed to be the most intelilgent species? Where's the brain power?

I plan to enter a liberal arts college as a History Major within the next year. In preparation, I would like to read a list of books considered the "classic" or essential historical study books, preferably books that would commonly be assigned in college. My specific interest is in Modern European history.

I was homeschooled in high school so I never had AP classes or many prescribed history books.

The book list can consist of any era- classical/Roman/Greek- "Modern". Would prefer the recommendations to be books from "well-known" historians (not quite sure who they are yet!) and mostly non-fiction. I've read probably all the historical fiction there is :-).
