The answer is deep down there.
I am sure that you know it..but maybe are denying it.

Try a different approach. The question is not who are you, but who do you want to be?
Identity is something that is a self-construction, although some people will allow others to define who they are.
Although there are many things that we have no control over there are those things which we can choose as a way to define ourselves. You can be honest -- or not. You can be loyal to friends, or not. You can be a wide variety of things.
Existential crisis often emerge out of thinking too much and thinking that somehow we have to construct an identity. The truth is that over time you will change. Most people do. That is to say that who or what I was ten years ago, or twenty years ago is different than who I am today. It is actually an endless pursuit to try and "figure out".
Each experience in life will change you in some way. In some cases, you will have learned a lesson or found something new that will also contribute to shaping who you are a person. Unless you never plan to "grow" as a person, or never change, the quest is somewhat illogical.

This is the human condition. It seems we're born into this dualistic world unkowing for a special reason. You will likely ponder this question all your life, and this is healthy.
I'm going to make a leap here and hope you follow. Our bodies are made up of common materials of the universe. Our bodies seem to be a natural reflection of a larger logical reality. It follows then that if our bodies are star dust, then the awareness we observe is also a common "substance". It's a little silly to believe humans have the monopoly on awareness, and I believe there is a lot of room to grow towards enlightenment. It feels to me there is a larger awareness out there who may just love us because of it's heightened state of enlightenment, and I believe it hears us when we call to it, because we are within it.
Pray to God with a simple question: "Father God, help me to discover my true self. Amen."
It's simple, and this is where you will find the things you require to grow in understanding. Be blessed.

Friend sometimes it takes years to find yourself, it doesn't mean anything is wrong. Sit down by yourself and ask yourself this
write them down, then work on putting them n the order that is most impotent to you.
1: what do I want out of life.
2: sometimes what you are looking for is right in front of your face.
3: the answer is you.
4: believe in yourself first and for most.
5: always try to make each day better than the one before.
6: do your best in everything you do.
7: you are the most important person in the world to you.
8: never let anyone take that away from you.
9: reach for the stars, you just may get it.
10: dream on my friend dream on that also may come true.
We don't know what is in-store for us, we only get one life make the best of it.
Good luck and take care.

the older you get, the more you find out "who you are". Sometimes it is as easy as deciding who you want to be and act accordingly until you are. Then again somepeople search their whole lives and never really know. In my opinion, it doesn't matter- knowing or not knowing. Just make yourself happy and try to live a full life.

Ask yourself what you want to do and accomplish in life. Everyday. Every chance you get to think about it, reaffirm your direction in life. The purpose of your life really determines who you are. There is no "essence" of a person practically speaking, so the answer to your question lies in what you will do in life/role you aim to take on in this world before you die.

Everything we 'know' is through our sense organs.
The real 'I' within us, is to be known with a perception level beyond the sense organs.
It is almost like, suppose a torchlight has an awareness of its own, and would like to see what 'brand' of torch batteries is used 'within' itself... well, it can illuminate every object inside a dark room, except its own batteries ! Our sense organs can illuminate for us to see everything outside us, why, even our own X-ray vision of the physical body, but not the 'being' within us !

Go to a quiet place, no TV, no radio, contemplate your every thought, your every word and deed. Break the surface of the mirror, remove all tittles and formalities, get rid of all material and communion with nature. Than with nothing else to attach yourself to, ask yourself who are you? You are just your emotion, will and intellect, the rest is a facade.

Take a Buddhist approach - and learn to go within - Inside yourself, in your mind, all the answers to your questions are hidden.
You just have to unveil them.
