Chernobyl happened when I was in high school. I think about it a lot considering I live in Ohio and the Davis Bessie power plant has almost melted down several times in the past few years. Also, so much is being talked about with the 'going green' campaigns for better energy and so more nuclear power plants are in the works right now. In my opinion, they are definitely not the right answer.
If it happened, we would have to leave immediately with whatever possessions we could grab and hope they aren't contaminated. We could never ever return. I don't get that part with the Russians and their 'mother land' and not wanting to leave the extremely contaminated areas like Minsk. They stay and their kids are severely suffering the affects of long term radiation exposure. For pete's sake - MOVE. It's your health and your children's health and there is nothing more important than that.
For the person who answered who is a top contributor answerer - I don't understand - who are you going to sue? The power company??? If that happened, they are going to be so broke from the stuff the government hands down, there won't be anything left for lawsuits. I hope you have a plan B. :)

Well, it would be hard at this moment, since there is no nuclear power plant nearby, but I am not sure what to do. Since I live in the United States, I guess I would sue as many people as I could. This would be the hardest thing anyone could live through. I would definitely need a lot of therapy. If I got through the whole ordeal without any radiation poisoning, then I would try to find a way to live my life somehow before the money started to come in from the lawsuits.

I'm guessing you're wondering what I'd do during the meltdown. I know exactly.
First, grab my shotgun, boots, duffel bag, utility knife, gloves, and mask. I'd grab my car and hit the local banks to see what I could plunder money wise, not safety deposit boxes (too much time and I only want to steal from the man, not people's personal stuff).
After that I'd hit the local sporting goods storel stock up on a few more weapons and grab a shovel. Then I'd get the hell out of town, at least 50-80 miles opposite the direction the wind is blowing to be out of fallout range. Bury the money, hide the gear, then meet up with the rest of my community. Come back for the dough later.
PS, you're welcome for the idea.

what would I do?..I imagine that I would be at the mercy of FEMA...which is kind of scarey in it's own right..
depending upon the level of radiation..there are drugs that can be administered..they say ionic iodine can mitigate some of the effects.
short and long term effects are dependent again by the level of exposure..
other than that I guess I would move as far away as possible.
