I have written many poems and my teacher says that i sould send one in to a publisher. I would like to try it but it seems to good to be true, and I don't think that it is good enough. What do you think, should I try it?

Please explain your answer.

From what I understand, Stalin did terrible things to his own people. Many innocent citizens were sent to the Gulags, etc. And yet, Stalin made Russia become a superpower. When he died, the very people whom he had oppressed shed tears. Curious.

That isn't a dig; I'm not making accusations of ignorance- I'm merely trying to bring to light the fact that no one discusses the basic facts that words spoken in the American English lexicon have completely separate meanings when spoken anywhere else in the world.

Most of this occurs in the realm of politics and philosophy, and most people don't understand that this is why Americans get a rep for being rude or obnoxious- quite literally, for the majority of average Americans, the word 'liberal' or 'conservative' or 'socialist' or 'communist' mean something completely different than the way the rest of the world sees them.

I can think of many dialogues I have seen between Americans and others, which become heated not because they disagree- but because they are saying the same word, and in their separate minds have two totally different meanings.

Can you think of any more examples of this? Have you had experience with this?
Why is this so?

Just curious- it's diversity.

Anyone who reads young adult books (books for teens): What do you like about them? What do you dislike about them? Does anyone think there are too many A-List type books out there (books that focus mostly on the characters' social lives, etc.) and not enough mystery/fantasy? If you were going to read a YA mystery/fantasy, what would you want as far as storyline goes? Just to make this question a little crazier, if you've read Harry Potter, what are your criticisms of it (I like the book- but if you have criticisms, that's what I'm interested in)?

In a world where nothing is self-sufficient, where opposites work together to create a harmonious balance, it seems reasonable to argue that the negative side of life is fundamental in order for us to appreciate the good. Have far do you agree with this?
