Hi there. I'm the author of a new medieval fantasy book that you might like. The title is THE BLACKGLOOM BOUNTY. It's 445 pages of action, adventure, magic, mystery and mayhem. If you like Conan, LOTR or Harry Potter type books, this may be one you'll enjoy. Being a teen, you'll also appreciate the main characters, who are mostly teenagers, too.

Good luck, whatever you decide to read!

Jon F. Baxley (Author, Editor, Ghostwriter and Proofreader)

THE SCYTHIAN STONE (eBook only)
THE BLACKGLOOM BOUNTY (eBook and hard cover)
THE REGENTS OF RHUM (coming fall '07)

Major Media Reviews:

Publishers Weekly

STARRED Review. A fast pace, sly humor, amusing dialogue and a richly researched background lift Baxley's fantasy, the first of a new series set in medieval Britain. When Merlin's long-ago apprentice Kruzurk Makshare (aka the Boozer) receives a dreamlike visitation from the legendary mage, he learns he must destroy another former apprentice, the villainous Seed of Cerberus. To do so will require a visit to the demon-guarded Blackgloom Keep. Enter young Daynin McKinnon, who discovers a curious rune-covered headstone, which may be the fabled Blackgloom Bounty, and brings it to Kruz's attention. Kruz believes it will provide entry into the fortress, while Daynin hopes the sale of the stone will restore his family's fortunes. The colorful cast of good guys and ne'er-do-wells includes the Pictish ghost of Brude McAlpin liberated from his tomb, assorted pursuing Caledonians and a bemused Prior Bede, whose monastery serves as a hiding place for the Blackgloom Bounty. Suitable for fantasy enthusiasts of all ages.

I could name off the usual (Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Chronicles of Narnia, etc...) but I am sure that if you are a fantasy buff you have already read all those. Some lesser known (but just as popular) are Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time series & Alan Dean Foster’s The Taken trilogy, & Christopher Paolini's Inheritance Trilogy (Eragon, Eldest, & the third is yet to be released. They are just as good but somehow are not publicized as much.

One to watch out for this autumn is The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing, Traitor to the Nation, Volume One: The Pox Party (ISBN 0763624020). It is only going to be two volumes. But the first one is really good.

Well I'm 18 now and don't read much Fantasy anymore but when I was your age (har har) I was really into the Dragonlance series by Margaret Weiss and Tracy Hickman. They're a bit more serious than Harry Potter but the world is ten times bigger and more intricate. You really feel yourself getting sucked in with each book. Start with Dragons of Autumn Twilight and if you like that move on to Winter Night. There's four books in that main Chronicles subseries, they're the center of the whole Dragonlance universe. Enjoy!

Okay firstly I'd like to recommend Garth Nix - speficially the Keys to the Kingdom series (starts with Mister Monday).
The Eoin Colfer with the Artemis Fowl but he's particularly good if you like Harry Potterish type stories.
If you wanted to go a bit more difficult to follow you could try His Dark Materials by Phillip Pullman
Then there is the Black Magician Trilogy by Trudi Canavan. Now it can be found in the ordinary sci fi/fantasy section and also the young adult section, but I found it quite easy to read.

Edgar Rice Burroughs is the classic, not Tarzan but his Mars series. Terry Brooks writes some great stories. Hard to read is tough to call. Edgar uses words that you may not know. Have you read, "A Series of Unfortunate Events"? My kids love them and they have wild characters and situations.

Another classic is "The Chronicles of Narnia" by C.S. Lewis.

One thing I like to do is go to Amazon.com and look up a book that I liked and see the other books people have bought that liked this book. Even if I don't buy it on Amazon I can go to the library with a list.

Diana wynne jones writes some books based on a character called Chrestomanci. He is a nine-life enchanter.Read the books in the correct order. The best of the lot is magicians of caprona.

Artemis Fowl book series by Eoin Colfer is about teen age criminal mastermind Artemis Fowl who even plots to steal the gold from the fairies.

Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote the Mars novels and the tarzan novels. There are 11 novels in the mars series beginning with 'a princess of mars'.Captain John Carter of the Confederate Army is whisked to Mars and discovers a dying world of dry ocean beds where giant four-armed barbarians rule, of crumbling cities home to an advanced but decaying civilization, a world of strange beasts and savage combat, a world where love, honor and loyalty become the stuff of adventure. The later books are about his son Carthoris, daughter Tara etc.John carter is a recurring character in all these books as martians live for 1000 years.

The best among the Tarzan novels is 'Son of Tarzen.' Jack, the son of Tarzan shared his father's love for apes.He was only trying to help an ape escape to Africa from his cruel trainer. However he got involved in a murder and couldn't return home.He chose to live in the jungle with the apes. Its a fascinating book. The social system among the intelligent giant apes,Korak's relationship with Miriam are all interesting stuff. Its a great coming of age book.

Dragonjousters series(joust, alta, sanctuary) by Mercedes Lackey. The setting is ancient Egypt.Hunger, anger, and hatred are constants for young Vetch, rendered a brutally mistreated and overworked serf by the Tian conquest of his homeland. But everything improves when a Tian jouster requisitions Vetch to become the first serf ever to be a dragon boy. His training is intense, and his duty clear-cut: to tend his jouster, Ari, and his dragon, Kashet. He discovers that, because Ari himself had hatched Kashet, the dragon is different from others that have been captured live in the wild and must be drugged to be made tractable. Vetch finds he really likes and understands dragons, and soon he becomes the best dragon boy of all. He still harbors anger, however, toward the Tian invasion. Could he, perhaps, hatch a dragon, and then escape to help his people?

Mercedes Lackey's Take a Thief is the tale of Skif, a young orphan reminiscent of Oliver Twist, making his way in the knock-and-tumble neighborhood between two of Haven's outermost walls. Skif is intelligent, good-hearted and creative enough to forage up three meals a day in a place where food is scarce and kindness almost unheard of. After a chain of events leave him homeless, Skif lands in the lair of Bazie, an Faginish ex-mercenary who trains thieves...until he is "Chosen" by one of Valdemar's magical horses and becomes a Herald serving the Queen.
