From what I understand, Stalin did terrible things to his own people. Many innocent citizens were sent to the Gulags, etc. And yet, Stalin made Russia become a superpower. When he died, the very people whom he had oppressed shed tears. Curious.

Stalin was a monster who killed more people than Hitler (but Hitler isn't a saint, either). He oppressed not just Jews but Christians, atheists, etc. In fact, the Soviet Union hasn't always been friendly to Christians, anyway.

He also killed his advisers that were close to him, fearing that they would take his power (a classic sign of paranoia). Stalin's cult of the personality isn't new; in China, Mao was practically worshipped and in Korea, Kim ll Sung and Kim Jong ll are "revered" by their countrymen.

Joseph Stalin was not the president of Russia. He wasn't even the president of the Soviet Union.

Stalin was Secretary General of the Executive Committee of the communist party of the Soviet Union.

There was no "President" in the Soviet Union, except for a brief spell in the early 1990's when the post was occupied by Gorbachev .

This may seem like trivial semantics, but the distinction is of critcal importance in understanding Soviet history in the 20th Century.

Many times those who are poor and oppressed are the most loyal to the system/ leader who keeps them down because they are swept up in a patriotic fervor/personality cult because of their own psychological needs. This happens in every country. All governments, regardless of form, give lip-service to taking care of the common people, however, governments are really support systems for the powerful and wealthy. All leaders have skeletons in their closets, some more literally than others. Stalin was awful, but all rulers are nasty in some way. Rulers only measure the extent of our ignorance.

He killed more of his own people than Hitler killed of his own people.

You used a generalized statement that people whom he oppressed shed tears. It would be so much better had you said the elite in his country that were not oppressed, but were part of the oppressor, shed tears.

Remember the very bad leader needs people to do his bidding, because he cannot do everything himself, nor can he be everywhere at the same time. So the people who were helping would be the "out" people.

Stalin was a monster. He created a famine in Ukraine. People were starving to death while the grain bins were full of wheat. When you do that to your own people it doesn't get much worse. In fact his successor as premeire, I think it was Kruschev, hated Stalin because Kruschev was Ukrainian.

One of the worst scumbags of the 20th century, second only to Hitler. Some people cried for Hitler, too. Never underestimate the power of propaganda, and the gullibillity of many people.
