Selfphotography, wow a challenging task. Seniors always suggest sun light as base source when the heavy studio lights are not available.

Using bulb with yellow light is not a good idea although using white tubes or bulbs could help, I have seen some snaps under those lights with good result at www.ephotozine.com

The how to sit part is more tricky, I would suggest you to close your eyes and make yourself into various positions, try to imagin watching yourself through your camera. This will not only guide you the position of camera but also your pose. If you are going for digital photography then you can open whole new world of great fantasies for you for example walking on the clouds or forming your face or body as cloud, or even greater one

I have seen great works of selfportraits at www.ephotozine.com for example this guy (I am sorry I did not recall his name anymore now) he put his face into his fist in a very superb way. simple trick but does a great output. Another guy put faces of family members on to Eggs.

Am I off from tracks? I think I am, well my purpose is to share some ways inspired me a lot :)

Now a serious suggesion. If you are up to sale your pictures too then keep the background WHITE. You can photograph parts of your body for example just neck and shoulders, wrists hands, holding some lasso chain or watch. or just posing if they are holding, grabbing, pulling things. You can photograph feet with different shoes. These will help you understanding the lighting as well as the camera moves and maybe a good amount on a side.

and ... Never forget to take your pictures using your computer or working in kitchen or into backyard or steping out of car or driving. (I am again off the track .. ha.. )

Here's a hint... no matter what you do, it's been done before. There have been too many people with a camera to create an original idea anymore. Even if it's original to you, it's not original to someone else.

Since I doubt you have access to studio lighting, all lighting is going to have to use generic sources (lamps, sun, bulbs, etc.). So, getting the !wow! photograph is going to be next to impossible for you.

Different ideas are to use the bulb effect to get a blurred motion of you, go for closeups of various parts, photograph yourself standing on a mirror (looking down into it). Really you are asking an impossible question.

Rule of thumb, there should only ever appear to have one light source in all of your photos. Even if you have multiple lighting tools, they should be on the same side. Always try to light yourself with the main light source at a 45 degree angle between you and the camera. Light should also come at a 30 degree angle from the plan formed by your head and the axis formed up through your body.

I could help more if you want. Email me: chris@wise-photos.net
