Anyone who reads young adult books (books for teens): What do you like about them? What do you dislike about them? Does anyone think there are too many A-List type books out there (books that focus mostly on the characters' social lives, etc.) and not enough mystery/fantasy? If you were going to read a YA mystery/fantasy, what would you want as far as storyline goes? Just to make this question a little crazier, if you've read Harry Potter, what are your criticisms of it (I like the book- but if you have criticisms, that's what I'm interested in)?

Overall I like the variety that can be found in YA literature. You have YA titles that are very superficial and all about shopping, gossiping, instant messaging, dating, etc. And you have YA titles that deal with more serious issues such as family struggles, eating disorders, rape, drug abuse, suicide attempts, death & grief, abusive relationships, etc. You have YA titles in most genres: mystery, romance, science fiction, fantasy, etc. You have historical fiction and realistic fiction.

You can't judge young adult literature by reading a few books. You have to read widely in order to get a sense of the field. You can find essentially anything you're looking for there.

What makes fantasy hard for me is that while some authors are good at setting up their created world and explaining it or writing about it in such a way that the reader catches on quickly...sometimes you can be overwhelmed and essentially stay confused. You shouldn't pick up the first book in the series read over 75 or 100 pages and still don't have a clue what's going on. But again, that's probably not typical...just happened a few times too many to me.

When I read a YA fantasy book, I look for mostly adventure, comedy and maybe a little romance (I hate it when romance takes over a fantasy book). I really enjoyed the book Eragon by Christopher Paolini, and the Prydain series by Lloyd Alexander. As for Harry Potter, I enjoy them because the characters are teens and it's a world that i would want to be in. It helps that the characters are very likable and even though they're wizards they deal with some of the same issues kids deal with today (relationships, etc.)
