I wonder if it is a totally praiseworhy practice to employ dyslexics as Proof-readers and Sub-editors?.
I must say that the adverts for staff do a wondrous job in finding euphemisms for antiquated phrases like "Drooling idiots considered for Columnists"
and "Inability to read and Write a positive advantage"
Personally,I used to worry about the Inmates of the Local Insane Asylum when it closed down.
But fortunately, they all settled in happily at the Grauniad.
BTW did you see the Corrections section on Wednesday?

A couple had two little boys, ages 8 and 10, who were excessively mischievous. They were always getting into trouble and their parents knew that, if any mischief had occurred, their sons were probably involved.
They boys' mother heard that a clergyman in town had been successful in disciplining children, so she asked if he would speak with her boys. The clergyman agreed, but asked to see them individually. So the mother sent her 8-year-old first, in the morning, with the older boy to see the clergyman in the afternoon.
The clergyman, a huge man with a booming voice, sat the younger boy down and asked him sternly, "Where is God?"
They boy's mouth dropped open, but he made no response, sitting there wide-eyed. So the clergyman repeated himself in an even sterner tone, "Where is God?" Again the boy made no attempt to answer. So the clergyman raised his voice even more and shook his finger in the boy's face and bellowed, "WHERE IS GOD!?"
The boy screamed and bolted from the room, ran directly home and dove into his closet, slamming the door behind him. When his older brother found him in the closet, he asked, "What happened?"
The younger brother, gasping for breath, replied, "We are in BIG trouble this time, dude. God is missing - and they think WE did it!"

A couple of days ago, someone asked if people thought Mitt Romney would be assisted by his (then-upcoming) "faith" speech. This was my response (in quotes). Please read it, and then respond to the question that follows it:

"It'll just make him even more of a laughingstock. And... the LAST thing America needs in the White House is yet another president trying to send the USA down the road toward theocratic tyranny.

"I'm glad I live in Iowa, and will be voting in the Iowa Caucuses. NO person having any kind of religious agenda will be getting my vote.

-- "Roadrat" -- Normal, sensible, and UNobtrusive Christian."

Before framing the question, let me make it clear that "thumb's-downs" don't bother me in the least. However, I'm very puzzled that the above response got me TEN of those, and only one "thumb's up." I thought mine was a very sensible and fair-minded answer, so if anything, I wouldn't have been surprised if those votes had been 10-1 in the OTHER direction. [More]

This is an ongoing issue that i have pretty much had all my life ( i am 16). I can say with 100% certainty that my Dad is without a doubt the cheapest person i know. And i don't know how to make it stop.He makes alot of money for one, about 240-300k per year and my mom who is divorced and a single mother making less than 6 figs manages to be more generous than him. All my birthday's are lame as well as christmas. I get the cheapest version of everything i ask for, and its all crap that i never use. I've wanted an ipod and or a computer for a while, but i can forget it because he is so freaking cheap, and my mom would but simply cant afford it.He goes to the Dminican Republic with his girlfriend every year in addtion to trips to NYC, adirondacks, B & B's all year round. He has been to the DR like 7 or 8 times with her and yet i have never in my entire life been outside of the USA.He is generous with her and himself and thats it, he dosnt prioritize his kids like he should.

The question is raised, Does the Bible speak anywhere about capital punishment, and especially is there anything about this in the New Testament?
Let me begin to answer this, first of all, by indicating that the Bible is one whole. And the statements in the Old Testament are just as much God's will as those in the New Testament. However, we will look both in the Old and the New Testament.
In Genesis 9:6 we read, "Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed. For God made man in His own image." In other words, God has laid down an inviolate rule, and this rule has never been abrogated in the Bible. You can search the Bible, and it has never been set aside. God indicates that when man murders, then he is to forfeit his life.
Now elsewhere in the Bible we'll discover that just anybody can't take that man's life. There are the constituted authorities who must do this. Now going to the New Testament, in Romans 13 we read about the role of government in carrying out the will of God. In Romans 13:1 we read, "Let every person be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore he who resists the authorities resists what God has appointed. And those who resist will incur judgment."
And then it goes on and speaks about government in verse 4: "For he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid. For he does not bear the sword in vain. He is the servant of God to execute His wrath on the wrongdoer."
Now in the Bible the use of the sword was to kill. It was not to beat, it was not to chastise. It was used to kill. It's like the gun is used today. A gun is used to kill. And here God indicates that it is the government's role to wield the sword, death-dealing instruments, in order to execute God's wrath on the wrongdoer.
This is written, of course, totally in the context of the New Testament, after Christ had returned to Heaven, after the cross experience. And so God very definitely envisions capital punishment.
Genesis 9 is one of the best passages that indicates at least one area where capital punishment is to be administered. Another New Testament reference to capital punishment can be found in Matt 26. The Roman guard had come to the Garden of Gethsemane to seize Jesus. Suddenly Peter wielded his sword and cut off the ear of Malchus, a servant of the high priest. Peter's act of striking at the head with a deadly weapon caused serious bodily injury and could have easily taken the soldier's life. Jesus immediately rebuked Peter by saying "all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword." By this statement Jesus is actually reaffirming the death penalty. The language Jesus used was directly parallel to that which is found in Genesis 9:6 - "Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man." Human life is very much valued by God. He gives life and takes away life. Therefore God has a right to require payment or punishment when man usurps God's authority. He can demand that punishment be meted out by the law given in Noah's day, by the unjust Roman government or by our modern day criminal justice system.

Ralph Nader long ago suggested that the people most discriminated against in society are those who are the least attractive. Scientific studies have suggested that we all haev an innate bias towards more attractive individuals. "Those individuals who depart so significantly from the most commonly held notions of beauty that they incur employment discrimination are poorly treated in such diverse contexts as employment, criminal sentencing, and apartment renting. "

SHOULD WE TREAT ASPECTS OF APPEARENCE AS DISABILITIES THUS FORBIDDING DiSCRIMINATION. IF SO, WHAT CHARACTERISTICS AND HOW DO YOU DEFINE THEM?

A couple of people I know have said to me that when you apologise to somebody you should not end the apology with 'but'.

e.g. "Sorry I shouted at you but you were getting on my nerves".

I'm eager to unearth the ethic that underpins this maxim. If you feel that the other person must bare some responsibility for your actions, how ought one to frame ones apology?

I am trying to answer review questions for my final exam in philosophy. I am terrible at this subject but its a core class I have to have.. Our exam is over nietzsche beyond good and evil. our test is monday and we have about 50 questions to answer and I can't even comprehend this book. I don't think I have ever read anything quite confusing before. I hate to inconvience anyone but is there someone who would not mind helping me?? i have looked on the internet for resources for each section but I can't find any. I got the cliff notes but they aren't helping because they only do a summary over each chapter and there are questions that the summary doesn't cover. Gosh I am freaking out. This is so difficult for me. Please someone help me in any way. I suck at this subject
