The problem says "put the following numbers into the standard form of scientific notation:

234 x 10 ^-3"

The answer said 34 x 10 ^-1
How on earth did they get that answer? Why did they get rid of the 2?

The answer is 2.34*10^-1. It's probably a printing error.

Looks like they might have made a mistake.

2.34 x 10^-1 should be your answer in scientific notation.

the answer can't be as you suggest.
Try multiplying each of the two entries out.
They don't equal each other.
