if we had taken iranian sailors hostage there would have been public outcry and there would have been flag burning in the streets, why is there no such outcry by britons. is it because we will not lower ourselves to that or is it we dont actually care that much ?

My mom is a single parent of 2 (including myself), never married. I moved out of her house 3 years ago. I live 2 hours away from her. As of January, my half-brother also moved out of the house, only until June, and lives 2-3 hours away from her. Him moving out was hard on her. She'd cry a lot and told me she thinks she depressed. She has thought of going to a doctor for depression pills, which I think is not neccessary.
Now, she comes home from work, to an empty house.
As of November, she has been talking to a guy, 5 years older than me, who lives in India. She called me up last week and told me that she is thinking of marrying this guy, and moving to India to be with him! She has never met this guy in person.
Is she going through a phase? What should I do? Should I tell her that I think she's going through a mid-life crisis? Any thoughts or advice?

I just wanted to point out for the benefit of certain types of men posting here that 100 years ago it would have been almost universally accepted than men are superior to women and that therefore they have a duty and a responsibility to protect and assist women. Men who insult women are cads and deserve no respect. It's a sign of weakness to be so easily angered by women.
Watch the Godfather sometime.

So you are a failure as a man even if you think that men are superior to women.

They live about an hour or so away from any major hospitals and don't have nearby friends/relatives to drive her. He doesn't want to pay for a cab or ambulance bill. What should she do? I'm thinking her husband is a rat and divorce wouldn't be uncalled for...but that is my husband's friend. I hate to think of a pregnant lady with one young child trying to drive herself to the hospital in labor. We're not close enough to be any use.

According to the below article from the Seattle Times, lawmakers are working to reintroduce the ERA, this time known as the "Women's Equality Amendment." Of course Phyllis Schlafly and her minions are already working to get rid of it. Do you think she'll be successful again? Or has America come far enough to allow full equality of the sexes?

There is a great deal of talk on both side of the political spectrum about what do to about the US situation in Iraq. VP, Dick Cheney, recently accused the Senate Majority Whip of telegraphing our intention to lose the war to our enemies. What constitues 'victory' in the modern sense? Do we win oil, or land or political might? If we lose, what does Iraq gain or Al-Queda gain from their victory? Can anyone on any side really be said to 'win' this conflict in any circumstance?

I read how Tesla's AC won out over Edison's DC because AC can be reduced with transformers. When I look at an animation of a DC generator, it looks like it's output is pulsating DC. Don't transformers work with that, ala a car's spark coil and points? Why couldn't Edison use transformers with pulsating DC from generators?

Do you think that being brought up to be a good, honest and morale person actually works against you? (Especially in a work/business environment?) Do you think that people without scruples get on in life much easier because their conscience allows them to behave unfairly without feeling guilty?

Does the lack of a conscience increase the avenue's open to you as far as what you are prepared to do in life to get on.....no matter who gets damaged along the way?

If so shouldn't we all bring our kids up so that they are comfortable doing more or less ANYTHING in order to survive and thrive as long as they don't get caught? Even bad things?

(This is a a serious question - no joke answers please)

My husband is a good man. He also has OCD and is a compulsive gambler. Right before Christmas, he hit my 8 yr. old (his step-son). I called the police and he is on probation now because it was a first offense. We are trying to patch things up, but he refuses to admit to his gambling problem. He blames our financial difficulties on me "talking him into major purchases"- which may or may not be true. I think it is really all the "little things" like hitting the drive-thru every night on his way home from work, and the like. He does nothing around the house. His attitude is that he earns the money and I do EVERYTHING else. It is not that I am perfect- far from it, in fact. I know there are things for me to work on, but I am really stuck on this right now, because he wasn't always like this. When we first started dating, he made me feel more loved than anyone ever had-even my parents. I struggle with Major Depression, and that I began to like myself again was a big deal to me.
