Since I was in the first grade, my teachers have been telling me never to start sentences with "And" & "But."

For the most part, I have been following that rule ever since. But--err I mean "However," I cannot help but feel like that rule has hindered me from expressing myself more eloquently and poetically in my papers and essays.

Many times I have looked at a sentence I wrote on a paper and went, "Man the sounds really good to me, but I know my professor's going to mark me for starting it with 'And', so I better use more lame words like 'furthermore,' or 'in addition,'"

Who exactly thought of forbidding students from starting their sentences with "And" and "But," and why?

And (AND) are we gradually moving away from that archaic rule of writing?

I'm thinking about going back to school to get a doctorate in linguistics. Can anyone tell me what I should expect as far as a PhD program goes? Also, I'm curious about my dissertation. How will I go about the research? And most importantly what should I write about? Am I assigned a topic? How long should I expect to be in school if my BA is completely unrelated to linguistics? I have a 1997 ford explorer 4.0 OHV and it idles funny and i went and got it inspected and the mechanic said it was my EGR valve so i replace it and the EGR vavle pressure sensor and it still idleing funny. And even if i slam on the gas it doesnt accelerate as fast as it used to.. I mean its really slow...please help!!!!!!

Recently I've been shopping for our daughter to be.We also have a 2 year old.As I walked through the mall looking at clothes for the 2 of them I noticed that all the clothes I saw should have been for adults.As I was looking at some shirts a young girl (about 10 or so) came out of the dressing room almost in tears.Her mother asked her what was wrong and she told her "I'm fat and the boys don't like fat girls".I couldn't believe what I was hearing!!This girl looked like she was about 100lbs.How can she think she's fat?


As I looked around in other stores I found tube tops,short skirts,and high heels for kids. Shouldn't our children be able to enjoy being young and not worry so much about how they look?When I was 10 all I wanted to do was climb trees.Has our society really made our children grow up before their physically,mentally and emotionally ready?
