Is your friend staving off catastrophe? The friend might be staying or starving too. Maybe all three. I'd ask the friend again. Maybe the friend likes the place in spite of starving while staving.

Well Galsy, if you were starving, you would be hungry, but I do not know what staving is !

your starving does literally mean your hungry,but i think your friend meant it in a way that its a bad thing to do i.e if you pick up an ugly guy just for the sake of it -i might say to you- your starving

she either means she's hungry
or if she said "you're starving" she probably meant you look very skinny and should eat some food

i am starving = i am extremerely hungry that i couldnt wait to eat anymore, can't stand anymore..
hungry = well i am hungry but it's ok i still can wait for my lunch an hour later...
=)
