Puritanism. Most Americans are prudes.

In China the toilets have no doors or walls and occasionally face each other. I remember a girl I was traveling with just held it until we got to the hotel room because she didn't want to pee while facing some old Chinese lady.

I thought she was going to explode.

Hi, SSSboy! I think it`s because there is some much hygiene involved. I really don`t wan to see another women do her pad change when she`s on her period. Not to mention, men`s toilets are usually separate to, in Canada anyways!

It is a cultural thing. In many parts of the world, unisex bathrooms exist. The stalls are set up so we don't have the tampon stuff like previous answerer's noted. I'm a woman, and I think women are the pigs when it comes to public restrooms.

all toilets are separate, men's and women's... are we talking about urinals? women pee and poop in the toilet, so they need to be separate. Men use urinals, and if they want to poop then they use the toilet.... why are those separate ??

No idea. I've often used the men's bathroom when the woman's room had a really long line. I run in, say "excuse me gentlemen, I'll just be a second!". I pee, then I leave (without washing my hands).

I always get the same response: The men freeze: like deer in headlights.

No harm - no fowl. Everybody wins.

to reinforce the sterotype that men and women are different...it was just like the racial segregation in the US in the 1960's....if it were really such a big deal we would have different bathrooms in our homes too.

Privacy. The same thing you are looking for when you take a dump.

We are just more self-conscious and I guess we aren't like the guys who can not only use an open restroom but even shower out in the open together!
