You can try this, and see if the simplest method works..Just Turn your back and walk away. Never chase him to get it back..This will often make the dog realize that play time is over if he will not give the ball back to you.
However, if that doesn't work after just a couple of tries,
Another method is to begin training using a two ball method.

Use 2 balls. Throw one and hide the other behind your back. When your dog gets close with the first ball, whip out the one behind your back.

Most dogs will then drop the first and chase after the second. You MUST wait until your dog drops the first one before throwing the second . Eventually the dog will come and drop it, anticipating the second ball.

Eventually you can go to using one ball and he will soon be enthusiastic about retrieving it..

Wow, he retrieves for you without formal training, and at 7 months no less. Good boy him a lot and pet him when he does what you say. Most German Shepard's have personality plus!! Take him to a local obedience training program. (Sometimes offered by pet shelters at a lower
cost or for free. Ask your Vet, or check with your local shelter.) Sounds like a really good dog!!

Sounds to me like the dog takes after the master. LOL

He's not stubborn. The only way he is going to learn, is by continually training him, or taking him to obedience classes.

you just have to keep trying the same thing over and over. and you have to reward him....every single time he accomplishes the task you give him. you can purchase small treats the size of a dime and you give him one with lots of praise for doing whatever it is you asked.
and a year from now when you think you no longer need to give him a treat for each task/trick he performs......you do... you still have to reward him.
you have to look at it the same as your job. you wouldn't do it if you weren't paid....................he is the same.
so lots of praise, treats and hugs for him everytime he does anything right!
