Ever since George Orwell (pseudonym of Eric Blair) wrote the novel, 1984, the term "Orwellian" has been a term to describe "big brother" government as seen in a totalitarian society. Many, including me, believe his satired state has come to be realized (with so many people willing to believe anything our government says and also so many people willing to give up freedom and liberty for perceived safety, and our government's invasion of every realm of our privacy).

I was pondering this question: If George Orwell never wrote 1984, what word would be used to describe this state?

My friend has a painful secret which is not her fault. She was child abused very very badly, emotionally, physically and was neglected. She cut off communications from her abusive parents. It's been many years now. She has a fear of intimacy because of her past. She does not allow herself to get close to people because she is ashamed of her past, she feels that getting close to people means sharing her past, present and future(correct), but she just won't open up. How can I help or has anyone been in her situation.

Ok you know those depression quizes for teens online? I've been taking quite a few of them and answering completely honestly... and it tells me that I may be suffering from a severe case of depression. I sortof beleive it myself. I have been feeling MANY of the symptoms lately. I talked breifly about it with my mom and she slightly agrees with me. I'm very embarassed to tell her that I've been taking these quizes, and don't trust my school counselor a whole lot. I don't know what I should do, or who I should talk to. I'm only 13. PLEASE help and I'm totaly honest that I'm not exagerating.

It is clearly written on the packets and tobacco advertisements. Still people smoke & new cigarette companies are established. If a person offered a glass of water with a label - "Poison" on top of the container, will he consume that? Why it is not followed in smoking? What is the logic behind this?
