The US was in VN to try and keep an illegal government in power. The reason most Americans didn't know who the "enemy" was , was because they were in the middle of a civil war, where they had no right to be. Eventually the US were driven out. Read up on "Indo China" following the fall of Dien Bien Phu in the early 50 s, and you will understand more about the whole mess. Because of this drawn out war , forced on the Vietnamese people, it took a long time for the nation to recover. After the Americans " left ", post haste, The Vietnamese army turned it's efforts into defeating Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia that was responsible for " The Killing Fields". They , then withdrew and let the Cambodian people run their own country.

Short answer... No

Not sure what you mean by battle loss. Tet offensive looked like a North Viet victory, but it was basically ineffective in attaining any strategic victory.

Though some argue that it did cause State side activists like the Democrats today, to gain public support to pressure American into signing a peace treaty with NViet.

Unfortunately NViet did not honor that treaty and as soon as America pulled its troops out they invaded again. And the democrats of today(Kerry) let the south viet suffer death and destruction so they could have good political careers.

So you could actually say politions (kerry, clinton) went on to fame and fortune at the cost of millions of South Vietnamese lives.

Vietname where as recent as 86 the majority of the population were queuing up for rotten rice while the Communist government lived in splendor.

And now the same people that made their career during Vietnam are spreading the same lies today for power and fame. all at the cost of the Iraqi women and children that would just like to live in peace.

How do these people look in the mirror?

We, the USA,never lost a major battle during the Vietnam war. Someone mentioned TET of 68. I happened to have been at Khesanh Combat Base during the infamous "Siege of Khesanh". We were surrounded by a much superior force manpower wise but we held for seventy seven days. The enemy, NVA, had us outnumbered 6,000 to some say as many as 40,000. Our air support pounded the NVA day and night and the enemy couldn't get together in sufficient numbers to overrun our base. We also occupied several hill top positions around Khesanh and the enemy attempted to overrun those on several occasions and were defeated. I don't remember any battle that was lost to the NVA during TET of 1968.

Yes, America was the aggressor in some battles in Vietnam - so the USA did loose some of the battles upon Vietnam.

The USA however never did LOSE a major battle in Vietnam militarily even though we lost the war politically.

Some people say we lost the war. If that were so I'd like to hear them explain why Vietnam is moving at break-neck speed toward capitalism and why Vietnam can't get on good terms with us fast enough. They're teaching English to their kids, not Russian or Chinese.

We came out on the losing end of some small skrimishes. Anything big enough to be called a "battle" we won. Our guys could call upon unlimited firepower.

Lenny, we won lots of battles in Viet Nam. But the cost of the winning was way, way too much. I guess what I am saying is...there are two ways to loose battles...we may have won some, but in the end, the loss was too great to claim any victory.

Some say we lost....some say we didn't. But the fact is. It was a Draw. We really didn't win the war. Mainly because of Political issues. The Viet Cong hide within the people we where helping and we actually supplied them with food and ammo. But couldn't do anything about it cause innocent people where there and the tree hugging hippies where having cows. So if you want to get Technical. We didn't win. We withdrew. Making it a Draw.

on the tactical small unit level yes. The enemy only fought the US troops when the had numerical advantage. Otherwise attacking US forces was suicide.

Absolutely. Most people would argue that the U.S. didn't even win the war.
