I say this based on my own life observations. As a toddler, my mom and dad instilled strong religious values in me: I was shown the path to kindness, self-sacrifice and nobility. Schools and colleges - principals and teachers went overboard to lecture on "values", "principles" and "goodness" - I was a brilliant student and somehow took it all as gospel advice without question. I always felt this was the way of life for me, and "everyone".
But, not all was well. There was always financial problems in my family: I could never afford the bike or fancy gadget that my friend did. As I grew up, I never was able to date the girls I fancied in college - (none of them cared to see the nice person in me but only my poor status). When I graduated and joined a big IT company, the first time I hoped my life would take a turn for the better and I would realize all my minimum desires. But, that was not to be because corporate culture always penalizes "good" people - I lost my job to outsourcing!!
