Do a Google search, if you go to Argentina you HAVE to cross to Chile(my country) it is sooooo beautiful, in the North you have the driest dessertsert on Earth with cool places like Valle de la Luna, In the center you have beautiful beaches, La Serena, Vina del Mar, in the South super green lost of lakes you have Osorno, Torres del Paine, Concepcion, beautiful forest, lots of sport adventure, Punta Arenas you can take a tourist boat and go to Antartica and see the eternal ice. Recently the famous Barbara Walters went down there and she said "people always wants to go to Paris and things like that but you should visit Chile, absolutely gorgeous!"
Chile is the most economically successful country in South America right now, you are hear of kidnappings and things like that, the tourist are very well treated and juts so you know a dollar will be about 500 pesos Chilenos, that is really good trade, you can find good hotels for not to much money, go down there YOU WILL LOVE IT. In Argentina, Patagonia is kind of cool, Bariloche, Buenos Aires.

El Cono Sur, the southern cone of Argentina, Chile and Uruguay is fairly safe and civilised but you would do well to get a Hep A and TAB just in case.
Buenos Aires is a wonderful city and for the time being is still fairly cheap following the economic catastrophe of a few years ago. It tends to get oppressively hot and humid in high summer though.
Downtown Santiago suffers from smog but the air gets cleaner in the better suburbs of Providencia, Las Condes and Vitacura.
It has a great coastline running from the tropics of Arica way down to the Antarctic.
Little Uruguay is a cute little place where very little ever happens but the Mercado del Puerto in Montevideo will serve you the best mountain of fillet beef you've ever tasted.
The Peruvian stock market increased by 187% last year so prices are beginning to climb although it's still fairly cheap away from the internationally important archaeological sites.
KLM fly London - Lima for about £650
LanChile Lima - Santiago from £110
LanChile Santiago - Buenos Aires about £190

read the lonely planet guide. I have travelled around South America a few times as has my friend who has also worked over there teaching children. It is a beautiful country with loads to see and do and will be an experience of a lifetime.
All countries have their bad points and these are always highlighted. Yes you have to be aware of things but these should not discourage you from going.
You will have a great time and be on here afterwards telling people to go.

One of your best bets is to get in touch with a good and reputable travel company and ask them a lot of questions, ie Trailfinders or STA travel if you're in the UK. If this is your first time travelling I would recommend travelling with a company rather than going alone. There are many overland companies that you can go with, Exodus and Dragoman just to name a couple. I've been overlanding in Africa and I thought it was a great way to do it. It is safer as the companies have up to date info as to safe and unsafe zones, and you are with someone experienced so you see all the best places.

whatever you do DON'T listen to the state dept.they lie.
i spent the last 15 years backpacking the world in over 50 countries and all you need is a lonley planet guide and check the lp website as well if you are going to an "unstable" place.
no matter what,go and have fun, you'll be glad you did.

From your own country's advisory about those places/countries. One's own governent tends to be more protective and gives you higher precautions relative to the real situation in other countries.
