I think most people would agree that it's impossible to kick out all the illegal immigrants, so it's important to decriminalize them to some extent. We should stop illegal immigrants at the borders. We need to know who is entering and leaving our country.
Former Mayor Guilliani had some good points on this issue. He said that while mayor of NYC, the low estimate was that 200,000 of his residents were illegal immigrants, and that the US gov was removing 2000 a year. He could have chosen to criminalize all of them, but that would have led to pandamonium. How would you control a small-city's worth of unemployed "criminals"? So instead he worked to get everyone in NYC "on the books," paying taxes and supporting our country.
So instead you work with what you have and make it better. I think that's your whole intent as you seek to help the illegal immigrants who are here, but I would not support helping them come to this country.
