If you go for effect: a ballgag is best, both for the sub and the top.
Cleave gags are nice to look at to, IMO, but not very soundproof.
Tape is quick and effective, but personally I prefer to see lips. Also, taking it off after play, is not very pleasant.
Never ever leave a gagged person alone.

Are you going for silence or effect?
Best to use something that can _NOT_ be swallowed or travel into respiratory tract.
Duct tape will work short term, especially if the person is no trying to get it off. (effect)
For silence a combination gag/muzzle should make it hard for any sound to come through the mouth.
For sensation of the gagged one, something as large as possible..:-)

Why not just get a gymp ball, available at many adult shops.
Plus if you actually stuff something in the mouth someone may choke gag balls don't actually go into the mouth. Also Zipper masks work well too., just make the safe word something that can be mumbled.
