This test is designed to test the amount of the B Strep virus in your uterus. It's the same virus that causes strep throat but it's very deadly to infant as they pass through the birth canal. It's a very simple test and if it is positive it's nothing to worry about because your doctor can easily treat it and your baby will not be affected. I had it with my first child and she's a healthy 17 month old and I'm expecting my second in the spring. Congrats!!!

Group B Step is bacteria that can be found in the GI tract. This bacteria can then enter the vagina. If you test positive for the bacteria (as many woman do) they will give you antibiotics when you go into labor. They do this because when the baby is being delieved through the vaginal tract they can become infected with the group b strep. The antibiotic greatly reduces the risk of the baby catching the infection. Hope that helps:)

It is a simple test they do with a q-tip looking thing. If it comes back negative, then you are done and have nothing to worry about. If it comes back positive you still have nothing to worry about. The doctor will make note of it in your record and be sure the baby gets the antibiotic at delivery so he or she will not get infected. My test came back positive with my 2nd child, and everything was fine.

From babycenter.com "The group B streptococcus (GBS) bacteria is usually harmless in healthy adults, but it can cause a relatively rare but very serious infection in newborns. (Group B is different from group A strep, the bacteria that causes strep throat.) Between 10 and 30 percent of pregnant women carry GBS bacteria in the vagina or rectal area, where they may pass it to their babies during labor or birth. With proper prenatal testing and treatment during labor, though, the risk is small."

They wait til your 38 weeks to do this test. My goodness! You could of had the baby by now. They always do my at 32 weeks. This test is test that they swab the inside the vagina to see if you have a bacteria that is bad for the baby when the baby passes through the canal. If you have this bacteria, then you will have to get shots before the baby is born! This you have this and don't get the shots then your baby can have problem from it and some babies die from it. My sister in law had this, it is very normal to have this and is easily treated. Good luck and wish you the fastest and easiest labor!!!!!!

It's completely routine. They will do a vaginal and rectal swab to check for the group b strep bacteria. The bacteria could be harmful to baby during delivery if it isn't treated. Good Luck!

B strep is particular kind of bacteria that can grow vaginally and isn't a problem for you but can be a huge problem for baby upon contact during birth. In the off-chance you have, you'll get antibiotics to clear yourself of it before labor. If not clear at labor, you'll likely be advised to have c-section.

Strictly as part of a pregnency exam, it is to catch it early for treatment. It could cause severe problems with the health of your unborn.
I wasn't paying attention! SORRY This is the pregnancy catagory! I thought you meant as an employee because I had to do that myself.

It is contagious, kinda like Staff, T.B., influenza. Lots of employers especially health care, schools public service require tests of that kind for air born or surface contamination. It's just a precaution. They will pay for treatment (in most cases).
