VATICAN CITY - The Vatican's chief astronomer said Friday that "intelligent design" isn't science and doesn't belong in science classrooms, the latest high-ranking Roman Catholic official to enter the evolution debate in the United States.
The Rev. George Coyne, the Jesuit director of the Vatican Observatory, said placing intelligent design theory alongside that of evolution in school programs was "wrong" and was akin to mixing apples with oranges.
"Intelligent design isn't science even though it pretends to be," the ANSA news agency quoted Coyne as saying on the sidelines of a conference in Florence. "If you want to teach it in schools, intelligent design should be taught when religion or cultural history is taught, not science."
"If they respect the results of modern science, and indeed the best of modern biblical research, religious believers must move away from the notion of a dictator God or a designer God, a Newtonian God who made the universe as a watch that ticks along regularly."
Rather, he argued, God should be seen more as an encouraging parent.
"God in his infinite freedom continuously creates a world that reflects that freedom at all levels of the evolutionary process to greater and greater complexity," he wrote. "He is not continually intervening, but rather allows, participates, loves."
The Vatican Observatory, which Coyne heads, is one of the oldest astronomical research institutions in the world. It is based in the papal summer residence at Castel Gandolfo south of Rome.

Hello.
I think you heard about 7 marines that are getting charged with murder for just simply protecting their lives. I know 2 of those 7 marines very well I served with them together and I know they will not do anything, anything illegal. I want to get my story published, but how do I do that? Ok, so I have GREAT friends and family, but I'm also usually the one everyone comes to their problems with. Some will often go on and on telling me what's bugging them. I don't mind, and I really like to help out, but I can't STAND it when someone talks horribly about someone else I respect. For instance, my mom is ALWAYS rattling on my grandparents or my dad and I love them very much, so I want to stop her from going on and on about something that I can't fix. She tells me EVERYTHING that drives her insane, and sometimes it drives me insane. If I tell her that I'd rather not talk about it, she'll yell at me. If I try to reason and be a peacemaker again she gets mad at me. If I stay quiet she thinks I don't care. Sometimes I don't know what to say, but I don't feel I can just sit there, I don't know what she wants from me. Also my friends are sometimes gossiping and saying bad stuff behind other's peoples backs, and I try to reason with them but I just get the cold shoulder, ahh!?
