I want to visit Washington DC, Santa Clara and San Diego btw Mar 28 AND Apr 13. Pls kindly advise me on places i can visit. What i should bring along?

I asked this question in "Dining Out" yesterday, but I only got two answers. (One answer was really good, but I'd still like some more feedback.)

I'm planning a trip to DC in a few weeks. I've heard that there aren't very many places to eat near the National Mall. What are some good places to eat lunch/dinner and aren't too expensive. We are staying about 5 blocks from the Capitol, but please don't limit answers to places in this area if you know of some other good ones. Any other advice about DC would be helpful too.
