I am going there next week and I need to know the places that I should visit. Tell me about museum and things like that. Also about the malls that are close by. This is my first time going so I don't know much about what to do there.

The Smithsonian Museums are worth about a week of visit alone.
Definitely check out the Holocaust Museum. The Spy Museum is great as well. After I picked myself up off the floor from laughing about a previous answer....I'll tell you that the National Mall is not a shopping mall. It's the long strip of open park that runs between the US Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial, no shopping unless you count a few cart vendors selling crappy souvenirs. If you really feel like you'll go into withdrawl without a shopping mall, you can check out Pentagon City in Arlington. Otherwise, there is Georgetown, which is an internationally known place to shop.

As others have suggested the museums, the mall, monuments, government and capital buildings and such…

BUT don’t forget the local area and that the city of DC has some very vibrant neighborhoods like Adams Morgan, Georgetown and others. They all have great shops, restaurants and such.
Also don’t forget DC is a short drive from historic places such as Annapolis, MD (35 min), Baltimore (40min) and a few hours from Philly, Ocean City, MD and the eastern shore. There are also many famous Revolutionary and Civil War battleground sites in the Maryland and Virginia area.
DC also has some great live music, pick up the local paper and check out the local venues (9:30 club!) for some really good sounds from local and visiting bands/artists…

If you want to visits museums go to the National Mall, (Constitution Avenue). The Spy Museum is great. Contrary to popular belief DC has a lot of fun things to do at night. Head to Georgetown and Dupont Circle where there is a lot of nightlife. NW is the safest area and it has the most amount of stuff to do. Also, Rosslyn just across the river in Virginia is also a city and there's plenty to do there. It's very metropolitan over there.

You could spend days and days touring Washington DC and the surrounding areas. My family enjoys the smithsonian museums, and the monuments.... the spy museum is great, and the ford theater.

My family's adventures in Washington are chronicled here....http://www.kid-friendly-family-vacations.com/washington_dc_travel_tips.html

Jessica definitely deserves the 10, but I just wanted to add Arlington National Cemetery, The Spy Museum, Ford's Theater and the FBI Building. The Newseum too, if it's open.
