Wow, some really bad answers here.

Washington DC was originally a 10 mile by 10 mile square (looks like a diamond) that was plopped down between MD and Virginia. Approximately 61 square miles were from MD, and the remainder were from VA.

That portion from VA asked for permission to become part of VA rather than remain part of DC (in the days before many bridges, they felt they weren't getting enough attention from the DC government.

DC is the 'District' of Columbia. It is not a state, though the residents vote for President and have a non-voting member of Congress. It was set up a 'federal enclave' so that no local political decisions would interfere with the running of the federal government.

The license plates of DC say 'Taxation with Representation' as a complaint about the lack of voting rights in the Congress.

Washington DC is in a state of its own---an undeclared state (it is not counted as a state within the 50 states of the U S A even though it actually does have it's own representation in Congress)

That is what the DC stands for in Washington's name-- it stands for the District of Columbia
The city /state District of Columbia however is within the state of Virginia at the absolute edge of the state bordering out with Maryland !!!
In Washington DC you cross the Potomac River and you are in Alexandria , Virginia !!!

And, hey, guys----Washington State is on the other side of the freaking U S A on the west coast !!!!!

Washington, D.C. is physically located mostly in the state of Maryland and partially in Virginia but it's not considered to be in a state. It's a separate entity.

Few erroneous answers on here.

Washington DC is not in any State. It is the District of Columbia, which is sandwiched between Maryland and Virginia on the Potomac River.

Washington is not in any state. It is in the District of Columbia. We have 50 states, plus the D.C. The District of Columbia is land given to the fed'l government in our early days as a nation from the states of Pa., Va., and Maryland. The states gave the land to the federal government for the purpose of building a capital city.
