I asked this question in "Dining Out" yesterday, but I only got two answers. (One answer was really good, but I'd still like some more feedback.)

I'm planning a trip to DC in a few weeks. I've heard that there aren't very many places to eat near the National Mall. What are some good places to eat lunch/dinner and aren't too expensive. We are staying about 5 blocks from the Capitol, but please don't limit answers to places in this area if you know of some other good ones. Any other advice about DC would be helpful too.

Dining Out in DC can be wonderful as there is a great variety of food. It is true there isn't many good places to eat around the Mall and you often have to go a few blocks north before you find anything. For lunch, especially when on the go, Cosi's is often a good choice. Good sandwiches, salads and coffees, they are located throughout NW DC (basically everywhere north of the mall). At night you can get the S'more platter which is great for group outings. Also for lunch and close to downtown is Java Green, which serves good Veggie fair (its on 17th and I). Ben's Chili Bowl on U street is considered a DC insitution and has photos on the wall from visits from people like Bill Cosby. Dinner places all depend on what type of food you like. Ethopian used to be quite big, and there are still a few places, like Meskerem in Adams Morgan (which is incidently the bar district). Lariall Plaza is a good Mexican resteraunt west of Dupont. There is also the slighty pricier Casa Rosa. For Chinese there is MeiWah, which was Clinton's favorite when he was in town. Well priced, it can get quite busy and the staff can rush you. California Pizza Kitchen, Maggiano's, Cheesecake Factory, and Aramand's offer good food for chains if you are looking for something not quite as unique.
This is just a brief listing of some of the better places to eat in DC on a budget. Each place listed, the dishes start at about 10 dollars a person. If you are looking for fancier places you will have to find out from someone else, as I do not frequeent them quite as often.

Matchbox. A really cool pizza bistro. Thin building, great food, and great prices. Near Verizon Center, a couple of blocks from the mall.

Matchbox is very good. I also like the capital city brewing company. If you are looking for a quick bite, you will be able to find a Cosi on every corner.
