I am visiting the UK in June and I want to visit other places besides London. What other picturesque, British towns and cities do you all recommend? Some people have told me not to bother with Manchester or Liverpool. What do you all think and should I rent a car to get around the country or do you recommend the train? Thanx.

PS - the US Dollar is pitiful right now so any recommendations on cutting costs will help too : )

Just been to do some early shopping at Asda. Did you know that you cannot purchase alcohol before 8am. Didn't see any signs up about it. You can pick it up and carry it to checkout, but they won't let you pay for it.

I have never seen the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis), except through pictures. I would love to see one and would like to know where and when is the best time to catch one live. I live in the UK, so the nearest (and cheapest) option for me is Scotland.

In the US, many classic neckties designs are derived from ties which in Britain represent military regiments, prep schools, colleges, professional organizations, and social clubs. In the US, with the exception of Ivy League ties, this is a relatively unknown phenomenon.

But when an American visits the UK, should they refrain from wearing neckwear which might have such symbolism, lest they be deemed a poseur and a fraud? Will they be viewed with suspicions wearing a tie with such meanings? (I haven't been to England since I started wearing neckties regularly, so it hasn't been an issue.)

I have to get a blue card in order to participate in a work abroad program in the UK. However, I read that the blue card isn't valid on the Isle of Man. I think that means that I couldn't work there, but does that also mean I can't travel there?

I'm an American that's in love with England, although I've never studied the geography and all the history of it.

Well, my questions are:
Does Britain = England?
or Does Britain = the United Kingdom?
And is the United Kingdom just England? Or is Scotland, Ireland, and perhaps some other countries included?

If you can answer all these questions, that'd be lovely.

Helpful responses only, please!

Let's say I have this friend who is moving from the US to the UK (England). She just turned 14 in Sept. and just finished the 8th grade. So, let's say that she was moving in Sept. (before her b-day) and her birthday is Sept. 28. If she just finished the 8th grade in the US, what year of school in England would she be in based on her birthday? Also, if she was in year 10, wouldn't her birthday have to be before Sept? I've always heard that if the person's birthday was before Sept, they would be in a higher year than those born later in the year. For instance, a kid born in May would be in Year 10, but the kid's friend born in October, would be in Year 9. Any help with this would be great! Thanks!

Next year I will be flying to London, England from the states. I've been a bit paranoid about it because I'll be 17 and I'll be alone. I'm not scared because I'll be alone, but rather because I think people may give me problems.

If my father uses his credit card to purchase a hotel room for me, would that be alright even though I'll be staying there alone?

Would there be any problems with the flight?

Has anyone else done this? I'm nervous. I tried calling some places and they all said "Well I don't know." Jeez, that's not really helpful, is it?

I'll be 2 months short of being 18 if that changes anything.

I'm still in highschool but am planning on going the medical field route to become a pediatrician. However I want to move to the UK later and heard that doctors there are not paid enough and I would be better off living here. Is this true?

Also will I be employed there even though I graduated from an American medical school?

Thanks for any information.
