Let's say I have this friend who is moving from the US to the UK (England). She just turned 14 in Sept. and just finished the 8th grade. So, let's say that she was moving in Sept. (before her b-day) and her birthday is Sept. 28. If she just finished the 8th grade in the US, what year of school in England would she be in based on her birthday? Also, if she was in year 10, wouldn't her birthday have to be before Sept? I've always heard that if the person's birthday was before Sept, they would be in a higher year than those born later in the year. For instance, a kid born in May would be in Year 10, but the kid's friend born in October, would be in Year 9. Any help with this would be great! Thanks!

In English schools, the year is almost entirely based on age rather than ability level. Children then work within ability groups in their own classes, so the grade your friend's daughter was in is irrelevant - what matters is her age.

September 1st is indeed the cutoff date. A child who was 5 on September 1st will be put into Year 1 in a school, whereas a child who was 5 on August 31st would go into Year 2. (Reception class, equivalent to US Kindgergarten, is for children who were 4 on or after Sept 1st of that year, but education isn't compulsory until the term a child turns 5, so they don't have to go to Reception at all - or might start mid-year).

So, the school years run like this:

If someone will turn 6 from Sept 1 - Aug 31, they go into Year 2
If someone will turn 7 in that period, they go into Year 3
If someone will turn 8 in that period, they go into Year 4
If someone will turn 9 in that period, they go into Year 5
If someone is 10 in that period, they go into Year 6
If someone is 11 in that period, they go into Year 7
If someone is 12 in that period, they go into Year 8
If someone is 13 in that period, they go into Year 9
If someone is 14 in that period, they go into Year 10
If someone is 15 in that period, they go into Year 11
If someone is 16 in that period, they go into Year 12
If someone is 17 in that period, they go into Year 13

Thus a girl who turned 14 at the end of September will be put into Year 10. Someone who turned 14 in May would go into Year 11 in September (because she will turn 15 in the upcoming time period).

Okay, so i've just turned 18 in November - that would make me year 13. (17 and 18 year olds)

Hard to explain. =/
Okay.

Someone born between september 1st 1992 and August31st 1993 = Year 10. Age 14 - 15
Someone born between: september 1st 1993 and August 31st 1994 = Year 9. Age 13 - 14.
Someone born between sept1st 1994 and August31st 1995 = year 8. Age 12 - 13.

Get it?

Though, she may get put back a year because the school systems are a little different. I think we cover more in a shorter time.

Who knows. Best thing to do is email a school. Or ask on http://thestudentroom.co.uk

you would be in 3 hundred and sixty 5 days 9 on the 2nd yet while college starts back back in September you would be going into 3 hundred and sixty 5 days 10. 3 hundred and sixty 5 days 9 is the third 3 hundred and sixty 5 days of high school and 3 hundred and sixty 5 days 10 is the fourth. is there any particular reason? while you're shifting over right here then good success. I hoe each and every thing is going properly for you.
