I have never seen the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis), except through pictures. I would love to see one and would like to know where and when is the best time to catch one live. I live in the UK, so the nearest (and cheapest) option for me is Scotland.

Aberdeen is your best bet. This web site will tell you when to expect activity. Have you heard the song `The Northern Lights of Old Aberdeen'?

The aurora borealis (or northern lights) is a spectacular natural phenomenon, which can occasionally be seen in the night sky over Britain. Once seen, it is never forgotten.

This web site allows you to monitor geomagnetic activity in real time, and will let you know when aurora may be visible from the UK.

We offer a free Aurora Alert email service to warn you whenever aurora are likely to be seen across Britain. These alerts can be forwarded to your phone as a text message, so you will know when to look out for aurora wherever you are.

AuroraWatch is now using data from our magnetometer near Aberdeen for improved stability.

You can actually see the Northern Lights from some areas of north-west Scotland. My husband even saw them from the north-eastern tip of Northern Ireland, looking out towards the Kintyre peninsula. This site- http://www.wildlifehebrides.com/safari/chronicles has some fascinating info. Sounds like it would be a great trip to make!

Not far enough north. You will have to go to the Arctic Circle, although sometimes you can see them from a plane above Scotland.
