where is the best area of the city to stay - want to be close to bars, restaurants and public transport, but it must be a safe, area and not very expensive or over commercialised. Dont want to be in the middle of rowdy party-goers but want a lively enough atmosphere. Any ideas?

the question seems reasonable to me. A glance at the yahoo submission and the recent petition against the torture of Albanian minors by the police suggests that there is institutional racism rather than xenophobia (fear). It is surely not fear that prompts torture but racism. The same can be said of the rise of LAOS, or indeed the torture of Necati Zontul ion 2001 and 165 others. So the question should be whether Greece shares this racism, is aware of the xenophobia that drives it, or whether (as I hope and suspect) it is confined to a very few (but influential) sectors in Greek society - specifically the police-force, army, Church and Government. And of course, it is possible to instance numerous policemen and women, Hierarchs in Greece and beyond who are sickened by the rise in racism and the surge in xenophobic propaganda.

role of Graffiti?

Much of the xenophobia recently has been orchestrated by the Church and its support for a number of far-right wing political movements

I have searched the net for a hotel and there are so many good ones to choose from that I can't decide! We need a triple room or suite enough for 3 people to sleep. None of us have ever been to Venice are excited about seeing the canals and riding on water buses, etc. Are the hotels right on the water good ones? I have heard the Concordia that overlooks St Marks square is a great place, but it doesn't appear to be on the water. I guess that's not a big deal, but would be nice to have a canal view. Does anyone know a bit about this? How much walking does the average traveler have to do in Venice? What would the weather be like there the middle of January?

I haven't traveled over seas since 1970 so I'm not sure what the prices are now. My friend got talked into going on a 11 day trip to Europe - England/France/Italy. They fly from Buffalo to NYC and join the group. Then about 3 days in each place, only the cities, nothing country. Not sure how many meals are included. They had to pay extra for Vatican CIty. She is paying a little over $2,000. They are going in February to boot.

She is now having second thoughts but won't cancel for her friend's sake. She has heard nothing but bad things about France. Not England or Italy. I told her that if they are nasty to her she should tell them to stuff it - they like our money well enough. I know 5 people who didn't listen to advice about traveling to Paris and they all hated it. Said the city was dirty and the people nasty to Americans.

We've done Budapest, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Bruges, Valencia and Kracow (our favourite) in the past few years. Our requirements are that the city has some history and culture, nice architecture, good food, reasonable prices, and is compact enough to get to most of the sites on foot. Any recommendations? I'm thinking of Split by the way - any comments on this?

I can see that the greeks in our section we are not so united..Sometimes i see it in the real life too..
Dont you think that we have to work as a united team and leave apart the personal hatred?(and i dont speak about elections of course, the political issues can not be the same from one to the other)..But i can see sometimes that the conflicts...start in our section...
What is missing finally?
