where is the best area of the city to stay - want to be close to bars, restaurants and public transport, but it must be a safe, area and not very expensive or over commercialised. Dont want to be in the middle of rowdy party-goers but want a lively enough atmosphere. Any ideas?

have a look on www.hostelworld.com or www.hostels.com they have a great range with reviews o you know exactly what your getting, they have hostels and hotels, i would reccomend hostels, if u need get a private room with an en suite, u might meet some cool people but not pay a fortune!plus most of the hostels in europe have special discounts for trips in their cities and they will prob know the bars to go to and the ones to avoid
