In the tourist resorts, they'll accept anything - but don't expect a good exchange rate. Take some sterling for emergencies, but the best approach is to use your debit card to withdraw cash from the ATM at the airport when you arrive.

If you are going from UK take Sterling and don't change at hotels or change offices go to banks they give a better rate.Changing it before you come is not a good idea the exchange rate is better in Turkey. Some businesses in tourist areas accept Sterling but be careful they may offer an out of date rate.A lot of people here say use exchange offices they obviously lack experience they are much lower rates than banks.

Yeah I had a holiday there, Sterling is used just as easily as Turkish Lire, and you can even use Euro's without any trouble. Infact we often mixed Lire and Sterling together to pay for one meal! Most prices are shown in Turkish Lire and Sterling too.
All the businesses stuck to a base rate of 2.5 Lire for £1 when I was there in July.
Have a lovely time, I cant wait to go back there!

Take a bit of both - your friend is right, they love Sterling! Don't know where the previous answer was staying but I've also been to Turkey three times and they preferred Sterling to their Lira.

I went there for 2 weeks in August and both my b/f and i took British sterling travellers cheques, however some places will actually change up the british pound and most places accept the Euro.
Dont forget your £10 in english cash for when your at the airport!
Forgot to say we changed our travellers cheques into lira!

Well, our currency is YTL and we prefer liras. But if you have sterling you can go to any exchange office in Turkey and change them.
The ones who mention that they used sterling can be right because Turkish people don't like being rude to their guests (and tourists are guests in our country) not that they were happy to get sterling but didn't want to bother the person in front of them. Lira is the best currency to use in Turkey.
Have fun in Turkey i wish you a nice holiday.

All hotels, touristic restaurants and shops in tourist areas will accept almost all currencies, but with a slightly lower rate. It is best to exchange your pounds to lira at a bank or exchange office. The rates change slightly everyday. However, the difference is not much. To give an example, buying rate could be 2.50 YTL on monday and 2.55 on tuesday. In some shops you can bargain better with Turkish Lira. Definitely lira for taxis and buses.
Also credit cards/cash cards are welcome in most places. But, Turkish shopkeepers still love cash and you will get a lower price when you pay in cash.

what you should do is take either euro or sterling to turkey and change it at the bank their. you can go to somewhere like Akbank or Deniz Bank they will give you a better rate than what you would get in the UK. also dont rush to change your money as soon as you get their. if the rate looks low wait until the next day it always goes straight back up. so just change about £50 now to last until you get out there. for £50 youre looking for about 125 YTL. the exchange rate is usually about 2.5 .. so dont settle for anything lower than this.

If you bring Sterling it will be fine. That was you will get the best rate when you exchange money. The rate you buy YTL (Turkish Currency) in the UK won't be as good as when you change it in Turkey. EVERYWHERE in Turkey there are money changing places called "Dovis" you can change as you need it even. Have a nice holiday.
