Split is OK, but you should visit Dubrovnik it is I believe some 10km far from there, it is in same country-Croatia, and also it is very old city with beautiful architecture and off curs there is and Adriatic sea. But also I am suggesting too you to visit a Beligrade,it is a capital city of Serbia,it has very nice history. Or also, my favorite is Athens-the capital city of Greece-if you want to see ancient history you must go there! So have a nice time here in Mediterraneans!!!!

Split is good, but I'd recommend Prague tons of history and culture. The architecture is among the best in Europe - from really old to modern. I personally like the dancing building. The castle and Charles Bridge are great. Prague is easily walkable but also has very good public transportation if you want to use it. The prices are still reasonable, especially compared to western Europe.
There are a wide range of restaurants with good food - many of which have jazz or other music in the evenings.

I'd like to put a vote in for Prague, its fits all of your criteria well, having great architecture, history, culture, and really good wholesome cheap food. I also liked the fact that beer is cheaper than water there!
Being a Brit I should also suggest some British towns. I know that England is more expensive than most European cities, but you will find a lot of history and culture there. Take a look at places like Durham, Bath, Winchester, York and Edinburgh to name but a few.

Places I can really recommend are Dresden and Prague. They fit all of your criteria very well. Just note that one of the nicest features of Dresden is actually getting out of the town into the Elbe River Valley, doing some hikes to castles and viewpoints nearby, riding a steam boat on the river or cycling along the shores. Plan to make a day trip out of the city if you are going to Dresden.

Berlin is another favourite of mine, and although it is quite spread out the excellent public transport system makes it easy to navigate. Berlin is very hip, it is the place where young designers redefine fashion and Hollywood stars go to shop for clothing that will be the thing to wear next year. Some have even moved there. It has a very interesting history, good night life and is one of the cheapest capitals to live in in all of Europe.
However if you want to see something totally different for a change there are two other places for you to go to.
One is Granada. It is in southern Spain and famous for one sight: Alhambra. Just make sure you go in spring or autumn, otherwise the heat will kill you. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alhambra
If you are going in summer (June/early July) a great place to be is St. Petersburg. St. Pete's is a beautiful city - it is not called "Venice of the north" without reason. It is on such a high latitude that in late June it doesn't get dark at all. These are the famous "White Nights" when thousands of russian couples on honeymoon hit the city and everybody stays up all night, strolling in parks or sitting in coffee shops on Nevski Prospect.

Try something new! Go to Tirana, Albania. The weather is great this time of year, albanian food never gets boring, their masters in seafood and everything is priced reasonably. Albanian culture is among the oldest in Europe. Flights go for around 80 pounds from London with British Airways.

Most of the smaller towns in France are very nice, which one depends on how much time you want to spend sight seeing and how much in a place to have a drink.
And how you want to travel.
All coastal towns with a touristy reputation are a good bet.
Bratislava, Riga, Groningen (in the north of the Netherlands,) Luxembourg, just to name a few I have either been myself or where friends really enjoyed themselves.

Have you considered Romania? Personally I would avoid Bucharest the capitol it is ugly and overcrowded. Consider Brasov, it is in Transylvania and we have quite a bit here. To start with we have The Castle Bran (Dracula's Castle) we also are the town in which the children of Hamlin are said to have emerged from..the pied piper. The Cave is in our Center. We also have beautiful mountains, archatecture and good food.. Also things here are pretty cheap you get like 2.50 lei per dollar now.
