My wife and I (we're in early forties) have been planning to go for a month-long Japan tour next year. My objectives are to visit as many beautiful places and cities as possible, probably starting out from Osaka and ending in Hokkaido.
Should I get a JR Pass, commute by bus or rent a car?
Is there some way that we can arrange for a stayover or homestay for a couple of days?
Places to visits or events that I should take note of?

Any suggestions on how to do it in the most economical way?
BTW, I can speak and write Japanese.

I am currently staying in Tokyo and I am the only son. My father (a Filipino) died several years ago and I am now living with my mom. I married recently to a Filipina here in Tokyo last year. Since I am the only son, I can't leave my mom. My problem is that my mom insisted that it is Japanese culture that wives should stay at home and do the household. My wife insisted she wanted to work. I said that I am willing to give her allowance instead. Just to prevent trouble with my mom. Do you think that my mom is right? Is it really Japanese tradition that women are prefered to be at home?

The hairstyle reminds me of rock-n-roll singers from the 80s.

Maybe it has to do with their hair and how it conforms to
their head.. but it just seemed odd to me when I was there.

I live in Fukushima, Japan. My mum (in her early 50s, fairly open minded but not up for a 2-day drinking session!) is coming to visit and we decided to fly south to Kyoto for a couple of days when she does.

Can anyone recommend places to visit in Kyoto that my mum and I might enjoy?

Plus, any hotel recommendations? We'll stay for 2 nights, don't want to spend excessive amounts of money (not not exactly budget either) but want somewhere comfortable and in a good location.

Is it true that if I take an indirect flight to Korea with a stop in Tokyo, JAL would pay for me to stay in Japan over a night? I heard about this on the travel channel. I'm going to Korea this summer and I was wondering if I could take advantage of this situation and take a break in Tokyo for a night....
Maybe I'm just crazy!

I am sure the Heian Shrine is one of 17 ancient shrines in Kyoto, Japan included in UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites, as its picture appears on UNESCO's website ( http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/688/ ). The site also has a link listing all the 17 specific sites ( http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/688/multiple=1&unique_number=814 ) but I can't find Heian Shrine on it. Can anyone help me identify which one is it? Thanks.

Thanks for all the answers to my yakuza questions, but I have another one. What if you have a girlfriend who has a yakuza dad or something and you break up with her, will this anger someone of "higher power" and put me in a bad situation or do the yakuza not work like that? Or, what if I marry a woman who is related to a yakuza member? Yes, you people are probably going to yell at me for being afraid of them, but I was just wondering. Jeez...

As far as what you can post here... Just say whatever you think needs to be said about you! lol

Based on some of my research, japan does not support GSM, meaning it does not matter whether the phone is triband or quadband. Based on what i researched, they support UMTS or 3G.. So phones with 3G can be used in Japan? My phone is nokia 6233 and it is 3G.

Is it true that Japanese men heads the family? How? I was told that Japanese society is male-dominated. I have a friend who told me that men are the one who manage the household, and that women are just expected to stay at home and be a housekeeper. The man is the one who keeps and budget the money. He would give only to his wife only what is enough for the family. Is this true in many cases?
